There are loads of Bass around.
I am having reports almost daily on catches.
A few of the lads had a great day around 3-4 weeks ago on one particular mark taking over 50 fish between them to 7 1/2lbs...not on the fly though, but to crab baits. They caught quite a few last Sunday from the same mark, again to crab and worm baits. It is well worth ago on the fly,but I would say they are still a little preoccupied on the crap at the minute.
It's good news to hear there are so many about at present, and there should be some great sport to be had when they are up and chasing, which I don't think will be to long away.I also heard of they were taking mackerel well over a month ago on the boats not to far from the shoreline.

With the warm weather and warm sea's the crab are probably having the first Peel / shed of the year, and its normally the biggest, smaller numbers will peel untill as late as september in places, depending on the weather, but the main one is the first...i would say its a bit earlier than we up here are used to....but it's always later the further North you go.The birds on the island have started to peel early this year....saw a few on the beach last sunday....there where a few bird watchers about Here comes summer ;D ;D

The peelers up in the North East started a few weeks ago but the easterlies seem to have put them back a bit. I have heard of decent coalfish of 2-3lb being caught on spinners and daylights in Tyne & Wear and North Yorkshire so weather permitting I might get out this weekend with some Clousers and a spinning rod for back up.

Yes Bucko, ours can start anytime from April so long as its warm and sunny, but its normally the end of April before it gets underway proper but we have had cool to cold winds for most of the year up to now....with the changes in the weather patterns i feel we could have earlier and earlier sheds... i wonder where it will end?...The other thing i have noticed in the last 10 years or so, the Bass seems to have had some super breeding seasons, i have never seen as many small fish around before as the last couple or three years....plus a lot more anglers are targeting the Bass thus more are being caught, i,m talking on the island now.

I dont know much about your neck of the woods or the place you hope to give it a go, what I would do is get hold of a oridiance survey map of the area and look for likley spots. Glyn. goolge earth might help too.

Hooray! I popped my bass cherry at the weekend! Its confirmed that they are there at a local mark so I'm going to be giving it some plug and fly attention until a few more fish move into Esk. Here's hoping!!

Im also up for it! Managed a good night recently - had 18 all on the fly, nothing big - perhaps 2lbs was the best - but for a short session, couldn't ask for anything else! (apart from a stripping glove) All caught on a small blue & white bait fish pattern, fishing the tide out (and i mean out). Hoppy ;D

Nice fish Hoppy you did well, what we need now is a few more lads to get involved and agree on a venue. I dont mind if its local or a bit of a trip bearing in mind where others might have to travel from. Glyn
Someone put me in a direction of a Line tray please.

couldn't ask for anything else! (apart from a stripping glove) This is the one that I use, and they're a good bit of kit: www.fly-fishing-tackle.co.uk/acatalog/Fishing_Gloves.htmlScroll down to the snowbee stripping and fighting gloves. £7. Superb for the salt when you usually find the line cuts into your finger. As a make shift alternative put a plaster on your finger, works ok. For god sake don't search stripping gloves on google! well, not unless you've got safe search turned on! ;D TT.

Hi All, I haven't fished the salt before not with a fly rod anyway, I have snowbee neoprene gloves with only my index fingers and thumbs showing, If it's cold or my fingers are cutting up from a lot of use, I use thick surgical gloves and have a couple of spares in my pocket. ATB. Reeco

Ta mucho I will give it a look, I use an clear intermediate but it sinks and tangles everywhere in a bit of a surf so I will have to get one or make it. Glyn
