The winter is long and bleak! How about meeting up for a spot of grayling fishing in January (or even a rainbow bashing session)? We could even do a 'fur and feather', which is a great way of getting rid of unwanted christmas presants! I can organise fishing on the Wye and its tributaries. Alternatively, there is always the Taff in Cardiff - with its obvious attractions In addition, on such cold days it would be rude not to warm ourselves up with a drink or two, do you agree? Let me know if there is any interest and we can organise something. Best wishes, Steffan.

OK i'm up for it but i am going to be honest if Llandeilo RFC 2nd XV are in the hunt for the title (we are unbeaten at the mo) i'll be playing rugby. I'm retiring from the great game at the end of this year and if i can finish with some silverware well what a way to go! Cheers Aled

Greetings all, how about the Rhymney? It's a good grayling river and close to Cardiff renowned for it's accomadation of sickly vices! Looking at a date between Xmas and New Year, there's something on the brew for that time already as it happens. I can put a fair few up in Cardiff to allow for an apres fish and little seasonal bonhomie. The stretch I had in mind near Drathen is close to a decent pub as well .... waddayathink? Should you wish to watch a video of people catching fish on the Rum Google image "Draethen"

Looks good DB, although I'd better not mention I'm spending time with you to my Mum. She's very concerned about me being led astray!

Sounds a winner to me. Has a great stock of grayling, and a very good run of late salmon and sewin! A bit less daunting than the larger rivers too. Here's a shot I took of my mate making the Welsh youth team on the Rhumney (near Llanbradach?) last year. And a photo of the river itself.

Its quite amazing, if you fell in this river around 15 years ago you would be taken straight to hospital for a tetanus shot and have your stomach pumped. The same is true of the nearby Ebbw and Taff systems.
These both now have fabulous trout fishing despite some still dodgy bankside scenery in places and far too many supermarket trollies. The hatches are good and there's plenty of trout to well over the 1lb in most stretches. I've had catches of trout from the Ebbw that you would have been delighted with if they'd come from the Itchen

My Mam is from Bargoed and i also worked at Ystrad Mynach for a while. I can't get over how the river Rhymney has changed. My cousing used to catch some extrodinary browns up to about 2lb from there. And the Taff, when i lived in Cardiff i had some grayling up to about 1.5lb and browns up to about 2lb, but nearly always when i was fishing for salmon! Cheers Aled

The period Xmas - New year is ok with me. However, it was planned for the judging of the sea-trout winter challenge to take place at the meet. Since all entries have to be in by the 9th, should we look at a January date? We could move the final date to the 6th, leaving weekends; 7/8, 14/15, 21/22, 28/29 open for discussion? Or the winter challenge could be brought forward to before Christmas? but Christmas post and timescales may be a problem. Alternatively, there could be 2 winter gatherings! Steffan.
