Can anyone recommend a good floating line for czech nymphing in a 4 weight . Must float right on the top, super floatant, suitable for both short & long line nymphing. What do people think - weight forward or double taper lines best or does it make any real difference? Anyone know of a double tapered line in a 4 weight? I'm just asking as I'm off to the Czech Republic next week ;D and am looking for a last minute extra floating line. Tight Lines Flashyal

Hola Flasher,
getting a bit late for the Czech Republic? Fished there a couple of times, but not this late in the season, unless you're going for the spawning run of the lake trout? let us know how you get on though.
For proper Polish/Czech (actually invented by the Polish) nymphing you wouldn't have any line on the water, so your fly line is of no consequence. I have been using braid as my main line instead of a fly-line for a while, as no casting is required either - it's more of a lob. However, the MK2 version is better (thick mono and braid), but still doesn't involve any fly line outside the tip of the rod.
For short line and long line nymphing I would opt for a WF line and add a tapered braided leader if you want some presentation, which tends to be less important with winter nymphing - summer nymphing can be 'fine and far off', then the tapered braided leader can be incoporated (I use Roman Moser).
Stealth and short line nymphing is the best way forward though - much more control and much better fly/leader monitoring.
TT.

Nice one TT, some good links there. The Grayling season is kicking off in the Czech Republic now so should be some decent action on the rivers. The trout will be in spawning mood alright but it's the Lady of the Stream I'm going after. I'm fishing rivers down in South Bohemia near the Austrian border - The Vltava and The Malse. Some nice Grayling there but won't be as big as the Dee I reckon. Some absolute crackers there. Still it'll be fishing the Czech Style in their own backyard. Jan Siman will be guiding a group for 3 days, after that I'll be up to my own devices . Has anyone ever tried nymphing for Sewin with goldheads, or similar? I have caught salmon nymphing but never Sewin though have lost a few. It must be possible once you come across the fish in the runs. Interesting to know if anyone has caught decent sewin on the nymph. FlashyAl

I'm fishing rivers down in South Bohemia near the Austrian border - The Vltava and The Malse. Some nice Grayling there but won't be as big as the Dee I reckon. Hi Flashyal, The Vlatava is an awesome river, some absolutely HUGE trout (wild browns) present (I think I have some photos somewhere, I will dig them out)! I fished it a couple of seasons back and had some great sport - they do stock it with trout though (rainbows), some of which are around 10lbs To say that the wading is tricky on the Vlatava would be an understatement! There are smooth edged rocks the size of cars in the river so be careful. If you get a chance on your 'off' days try and look up a local guy named Vitek, he's the 'god' of the area and a thoroughly nice guy. In additon, great shops nearby - places like Ceske budevitce (spelling way off no doubt, place where Budvar/budweiser was invented!) - stock up on jiri klima jig and drop hooks, much cheaper. TT. p.s. not sure about the grayling season just kicking off, they fish very well August/September - October can get cold in those parts.

Found the photos, had plenty from the rivers in some national park and of carp on the fly from a float-tube, but not many from the Vlatava, sorry. However, I did have this photo I took of a monster trout from the vlatava: That is one bad 'mo-fo' of a trout! Taken on a size 18 parachute - with person still attached ;D TT.

Huge trout, but to me does not look real . is it a spoof photo. Oh! I don't think so Dai. Some of these trout from various parts of the world grow to "Silly big sizes"...Iv'e seen X amount of pics of large trout around the same size as that beast!. I would say that pic of the big pike recently posted is more "spoof" than this trout. The more I look at that pic,the more I think it is a bloody good editing Job.....It just don't look right to me. ....Plus nobody seems to know the true weight of it etc! ect!.....Something fishy going on there.(Excuse the pun) DAZ.

100% real Dai, although, may not have been caught on rod and line There are some huge trout in some of the Central/Eastern block countries. For example, Marble Trout in Slovenia/Italy: www.josko.org/forum/marmorata2.jpgradio.weblogs.com/0108104/images/2003/03/02/Marmorata%20SPDG.jpgI have seen mounted Marble trout of over 4ft long! However, I have only caught the Brown/marble bybrids when I have gone to chase them. Check out these 'bruisers' cruising a gorge in Slovenia - couldn't get close to them, unfortunately! Steff.

I was only asking, and they started ganging up on me . ....Dai,we/I was not ganging up on you mate...I was just pointing out what I personally think looks the more genuine. There are so many different stories floating around about that pike,I really don't know whether to believe it or not. ...I have no doubts that pike can attain that size in certain waters. I have just done some searching and nobody seems to know where the fish was caught?...Lot's are saying it's from Holland, and lots are saying it's from Canada. One or two say Germany.....There seems to be alot of confusion about it's weight .They also question if it was caught on rod and line. The current world record for a rod and line caught northern pike is 55lb....See link below....When that other fish is verified as a new record....I will believe. www.fishingfury.com/20070318/world-record-pike/i was wondering if Daz and Si know the names of the two gents holding the trout . I don't Dai......Bap might though......He's about the same age as those headers! ;D DAZ.
