Hi Guys, I'm just back from the Czech Republic having fished there for 8 days down in the South Bohemia region ;D . I fished the Tepla Vltava stretch above Lipno Reservoir for a number of days and found the fishing to be excellent. It was mainly nymphs (both Czech Nymphs & Tungsten Beads) but I caught a few fish on dry flies (small size 20-22 CDC patterns). On this stretch of river it was mostly Grayling that I caught along with a few brown trout. The brown trout were scarce though due to the spawning season approaching. The best Grayling I caught on this stretch of river was 42cm which I was told from the Czech Guides (Jan Siman & Franciceck) was a marvellous fish from this section with there being predominantly small grayling . I caught a number of Rainbows with a 10' 2 weight competition rod given to me by Jan. The line was predominantly braid attached to a flyline but with the flyline being on the reel with none of it in the eyes of the rod. The fight from a 2lb rainbow in really fast water was truly amazing with every twist and turn being felt . Other rivers I fished in the region was the Otava River (near Susice) which was a really beautiful river, the Volknya (stuffed with plenty of small grayling) & The Vltava River below Lipno Dam around Vyssi Brod. The fishing again was superb with many grayling being caught on the Otava River. The fishing below Lipno Dam was a lot more challenging with many rocks (unseen under the water) and extremely fast flows of water coming down from the dam. Considering this, the fishing there was from this stretch was amazing. While surprisingly I caught no grayling from this stretch, I caught plenty of brown trout ( with quite a few from 40 to 45cm). The fish were all wild and splendidly marked. I also caught a number of Rainbows (which were stocked) and they put up marvellous fights in the extremely fast water. I found that by wading in the extremely fast water (very rocky & stony - not for the faint hearted) I was able to extract superb brown trout by getting my nymphs in as close to the right bank as possible. I have to say that the fishing was superb with many grayling, brown trout, rainbow trout, and the odd brook trout being caught. As for secrets, the Czechs seem to getting back to fishing with Braided Lines on very light 10' 2 weight rods. They also have gone down the way of fishing with Tungsten Beads finding that the original Czech Nymphs are not working as well as before. However, I found that Czech Nymphs (Rycophilia patterns with orange & violet hotspots) caught me my biggest grayling. So I thingk they are pulling my leg and not giving as much information away as they want. Another big thing that they have started using is the Marc Petitjean Magic Heads on streamers and even nymphs. I noticed a top Czech competitor fishing streamers on the stretch of river below below Lipno Dam, casting them across and downstream with a Hi D line, rod tip stuck to the bed of the river and stripping them back back with 6 - 8 inch pulls extracting quite a few brown trout. Again he was using the Magic Heads on the streamers. I couldn't experiment with these as I did not carry any Hi Di lines with me. They have also started experimenting with fishing nymphs with small magic heads, while these are in the experimental phase I do not know how they are working yet. All of this gets me to a very interesting point, why not try fishing snakes and other flies for Seatrout using these Magic Heads. I for one intend to experiment with these next year. They have a lovley swimming action and could be particularly effetive during daylight. ;D ;D Tight Lines FlashyAl
