Water recreation and fish protection on FERAC agenda
Fisheries, Ecology and Recreation Advisory Committee meeting at 10.30 am, 24 January 2008, at Ty Cambria 29, Newport Road Cardiff
Environment Agency Wales’ committee advise on topics such as conserving Welsh fish stocks, protecting our wildlife and improving recreational opportunities.
Among the items for discussion are:
Strategic Plan for Water Recreation in Wales
Wales has some of the most appealing water features in the world, attracting people from far and wide. Over 2007, information and ideas were gathered from many recreation groups, sport Governing Bodies and public sector organisations. A draft strategy now exists, to which anyone interested in the future for water recreation in Wales has been invited to contribute.
Members will be getting an update incorporating information relating to wildlife, recreation and marine elements.
and
Measures to protect salmon and sea trout
Our natural populations of salmon and sea trout are amongst the most important in Europe and in addition to their ecological value they attract huge investment into the Welsh economy.
FERAC will discuss measures to increase the protection of different components of the stocks of salmon and sea trout by reducing exploitation by anglers and netsmen. Spring salmon and large multi-spawning sea trout in particular are the focus of attention as their populations are believed to be under greatest threat.
In addition, FERAC will discuss proposals for national byelaws for the ban on the sale of rod caught salmon and sea trout, and the introduction of carcass tagging by licensed netsmen.
