Officers from Environment Agency Wales are have been investigating a
pollution incident on the River Sirhowy at Tredegar in Blaenau Gwent.
Estimates indicate that hundreds of fish, including brown trout,
minnows, bullheads and stone loach have been killed, in the George Town
area of the river.
A member of the public reported seeing a thick white substance on the
river at 6 p.m. yesterday evening (5 June). Agency officers attended
the scene yesterday evening. Water samples have been taken and sent for
laboratory analysis.
Today, we believe we have identified the source of the pollution and we
are now looking at what further action may be necessary.
A clean-up operation is underway.
People are urged not to touch or take away any dead fish seen in the
area.
