Today was an epic, up at 4.30am - and a 3.5 hr drive to Yorkshire, via Oswestry and St Helens.
I travelled with Russello, swimswim and Grayling Hunter - for a return trip to the beat i had fished with Norsy, SMW & Swimswim a few weeks previously.
The weather on our arrival was beautiful, a crisp frost, sunny and not a cloud in the sky. The frost had thawed within a few hours, the day was stunning.
I was surprised to see the river still carrying colour and still very high. However the prospects looked promising.
The fishing was difficult, the fish had moved and weren't in the same lies as they had been, and the water needed searching.
I hooked my first fish after half an hour, it fought very well, but i soon realised that this wasn't a Grayling, but a recovering Brown Trout that was returned.
I had a few more plucks, before landing a nice fish, measuring 44cms. They dont half bend the Snowbee Zr2 - a great bugging rod
Grayling Hunter followed and took another cracker from the same spot, this one around the same size.
We also had a number of escapee Rainbow trout, these were in good condition but had to be removed from the river.
The morning continued well or me with a further 2 Grayling over 40cms, and one 37cms. I then lost a Rainbow, but redeemed myself by having another rainbow the following cast!
The expectations for the afternoon session were high, there had been a large hatch of olives, continually moving coming off, yet the fish hadn't took notice. I thought that the fish would turn to these later.
Then it was time for lunch - and swimswim did us proud as always!
swimswim being mum
Russello and Grayling Hunter
By lunch we had all caught fish, with swimswim having 3 good fish and some rainbows. He managed to use his new Panasonic Lumix camera - and the results (to follow) are very impressive.
The afternoon session was far more difficult - and i only managed
two more fish, both Grayling over 40cms.
At one point i think i hooked two fish, as i landed one grayling only to find my other hooks snapped off. There were no snags in the area i was fishing so i cant really explain it any other way.
Grayling Hunter had some more rainbows, but the Grayling weren't on at all. I can only explain the fish not rising by the suggestion that the river is so rich with other food that the fish dont need to rise!
All in all another cracking day - Brilliant company, good banter, good food and a good laugh. I do have to apologise to the boys for staying on the water for as long as i could, but i do get a second wind when fishing!
Anyway here's some more shots of my fish from today
Smile!
Yorkshire fish
Close up of markings on eye
Some more good fish.
Cheers boys and until our next adventure!!!!
