Well done to Hoppy for qualifying under horrendous conditions at his first attempt at the river eliminators. Nice to end this week on a high note. Put an end to the modesty and lets have a report on this day please. Now the pressures on Very best regards, Ian

Congrats indeed. Heard from Hopster earlier, he did very very well! I certainly wouldn't have fancied fishing in the conditions experienced today. Well done matey. TT.

Congrats indeed. Heard from Hopster earlier, he did very very well! I certainly wouldn't have fancied fishing in the conditions experienced today. Well done matey. TT. Well done indeed the Grayling Hoppmeister! I was lucky (?) to watch Paul in action and it was a tremendous performance on a section of the river he'd not fished before and in cold, high water conditions. Paul had 7 fish in the morning and 9 in the afternoon session ( not to mention a sea trout and losing a monster grayling and a disappointingly large number of other qualifying fish). Paul was 2nd in the morning session, 3rd in the afternoon session - finishing 4th overall - missing out on 3rd place by 1 point I believe! So our man has qualified to fish the final later this year. I blanked in the morning and caught 3 small fish in the afternoon, spending a cold day with a wet backside as my waders leaked around my crutch - I'll be speaking to the friendly people at Orvis later!

Thank you for your comments.
In all honesty i had a very lucky draw in the morning - in what proved to be a difficult session. I drew A1 which meant i had the pick of the beat in the morning. This was a real bonus - as i got to fish a lovely looking pool, that the 3 of us (PaulD and Grayling Hunter) thought would hold Grayling - and it did - i took 5 fish from here, including 40, 38 and 37 cms fish.
The river was very high, and it was blowing a Gale - the conditions just weren't in our favour. The fish also seemed well spread, as they were on the Monnow of the day previous. It was difficult to find shoals, and it seemed that i was picking up the odd fish from very likely looking spots. But there didn't seem to be many in the same lies.
The afternoon was better for all of us. I had the last pick of the session - but the beat looked very nice and i had 2 fish in a very short period. I then picked up a Sewin Kelt of around 1 3/4 - 2lbs - it was very well mended and was well on the turn. It didn't count in the comp, but was a welcome addition.
I managed some other fish, then lost a lot from one pool, including a real cracker - which would have been a high 40cms fish. I dont know why i lost so many - but it may have been down to my hooks or the fact that my concentration was waining towards 4pm. It was hard work. They just wouldn't stick!
In fact in the last minute i lost another smallish fish - i think this would have moved me further up the scoreboard. But hey thats life!
I really enjoyed the day and learn't alot about these competitions, if i do fish again i will have to put a bit more though into it.
Fair play to PaulD and Grayling Hunter - they did persist and well deserved their fish in the afternoon.
We had a good laugh and i'm sure we would do it again.
Hoppy.

Well done Hoppy! You certainly seem to have done really well on the grayling in pretty awful conditions recently. My commiserations to Paul D. I don't even want to think about leaking waders around the crutch area at this time of year!

A Big congratulations Paul well done M8 ;D I think after our mine and paul ds blank in the morning we indeed give 110% in the afternoon I too learned a lot from the comp and look forward to giving it another go next year. But again give yourself a pat on the bat the river was very high colored at times and being fished by many good anglers. Just imagine how well you would have done in better conditions!!!! very tight lines Graylinghunter

As you've probably worked out by now the most important factor in winning or getting high placings is not necessarily the number or size of fish but catching at least one in every session and minimising placing points. Well done and I hope that you do as well on the Tyne if you decide to fish.
