Thought this would be of interest to you nocturnals! Heres a fish caught in lapland last year. Two things of note: The fish are from stillwater. The river was logged and subsequently damed a long time ago, trapping its inhabitant's. Both were caught between 12-2am, in proper darkness, it was the end of august and 24hr daylight had long gone a month or two back. We were just inside the arctic circle. Heres a cock of 53cm, its dorsal was longer than my hand. The fish were taking size 12 sedge as they marched across the surface to the safety of the reed beds on the bank after hatching in the open water. Something to behold in its self. They dont fight in stillwater like they do in the river, that dorsal doesnt have much effect without current I have some other photos on the work cpu i will dig out. cheers

Now we are talking - grayling fishing at night!!!!!
I like the sound of that! Fishing the fly at night - for fish that feed!
Seems more sensible than Sea Trouting!!!!!
Hoppy ;D

Grayling are far more predatory than many think, and a tiny spinner fished of a fly rod at dusk, can produce some crackers... a Welsh lad I knew when I used to fish Llangollen waters used to take some whoppers on tiny mother of pearl fly spoons... I have always said I would give it a good go but have never gotten around to it.. Tiny means tiny Si

Grayling are far more predatory than many think Totally agree Bap. Fished with some French journalists back in August on the Wye. One of the guys caught a very nice grayling of some 45cm, which soon regurgitated a 2 inch fry. Also, a friend of mine caught a large grayling on the Nith on a flying c! I've never tried 'streamer' fishing for them, but I know plenty of people that pick them up when salmon fishing etc. TT.

p.s. cracking fish, nice one Rio I read about the large grayling in the lakes of Scandinavia and Eastern Europe some time ago, but cannot find the original links. Grayling of over 10lbs are taken from some of these lakes, with John Roberts making reference to a 14.5lbs grayling in his book; flyfishing for grayling. I see a trip coming on! ;D TT.

Steff, I think i have posted this before, I've had a couple of good Grayling on livebait at Llangollen, Trotting bullheads for trout.. re: Landlocked Grayling , there was a small Resevoir up in the Blackburn area that held Grayling..It also held barbel.. A friend kept a few in a garden pond for several years before releasing them back into the wild. Si

Here you go Daz: Me, up to my tits (it doesnt take much at my hight) Ray, with i think 56cm worth. Dave with grayling shaped sideburns Jasper, an excellent guide with something you may like. Dawie with a trout on the same sedge as the big fins were mopping up. Very few trout on the river we fished John, grayling completely dominated, had a 3lber on the lake though at sedge time. It you notice, these lake bigfins dont have the same underslung mouth as river fish. Is this something you have seen on Bala? ta, Lee.

Not really Lee....but i have noticed with the Grayling that once i start fishing further up the lake..and start to get nearer the center sections, the Ladies get a quite markedly darker... I presume, though almost always near a water influx, the fish have become lakebound, not like the fish caught nearer the outflow of the Dee, the majority of which move in and out of the Dee and lake, They cannot travel far down river any more but they are lighter colored fish or seem to be to my eye.. it may be the outflow fish live in shallower water in general. There always appears to be bigger head of fish toward the back end of the year and I think fish start to move into the lake to feed before spawning.? This is only what I think... and may be utterly wrong.. I aint fished there for a while now and I,m told the bottom end of Tegid has changed drastically, I hope to fish this year, and will see for myself. I will be in your area a few times this year perhaps we can have that days fishing..? I will try to stay out of Hospital this time... ;D
ATB Lee...
Bap.....only to my friends

Bap, i wish i could stay out of the hospital ;D It is my own fault that i didn't fish with you last season, i had plenty of offers from you and Daz. Just never got around to it. Going to rectify that this season and get back on some local water. Dai, to be honest the river fishing was poor. No hatch to fish, small average size, but very technical water. I think this was the main reason we were taken to the secret lake. The women in Stockholm airport were unreal cheers, Lee.
