Today was meant to be spent on a Yorkshire River with Grayling Hunter. However a last minute call from the river keeper informed us that the river was in a 'dangerous condition'. This was a disappointment, but i had booked the day off work and was determined to get out.
GHunter & I discussed various options, plan 'B' was decided upon, and today we fished a small Shropshire river.
We arrived early, the river was at least 1ft above winter level, and was coloured. The prospects weren't perfect but it was fishable. Towards the end of the day the colour had desolved considerably.
We started off in a few spots that usually held a few fish, but the fish didn't seem to be to willing to start with. They werent where I expected.
However as we moved down the beat, we started to catch, and had some reasonable sized fish to bugs. I also lost a lot of flies. This river is about 1/5th of the width of the Dee, and covered with trees.
We then started to catch with some regularity, at one point i'd hooked two nice fish at once.
Some of the better spots were strewn with flood debris and trees, and were not fishable. In fact the best little spot on the river didn't produce a single fish for us.
Half way down the beat, GHunter found form and took a collection of lovely fish
The fish kept coming, and we both were catching frequently.
Heres some more shots of Grayling Hunter and his fish!
We caught fish all the way down the beat, we were going to look at another river in the afternoon, but time was pressing on and we decided to stay. We had seen a few fish rising, and i switched to a Klink and two small bugs. This worked straight away with a small Grayling taking the klink, followed by a lovely wild brown coming to the nymph.
This was followed by a couple of better fish, 40cms - and a few others lost.
We did see a couple of tail fin damaged grayling today, with a distnict piece of tail squarely cut from the bottom half???
The day finished well, with Phil having the last fish of the day, and loosing a good fish
Grayling Hunter into the last fish of the day.
All in all a great day, great company and good fishing. The river didn't fish to its full potential, but it still provided good sport. In fact i should say we had 50+ fish between us.
Wait until the Spring and the dries Phil
Cheers bud, until the next time.
