The UK has been subject of a watery deluge for the last few weeks, and Shropshire and Mid Wales seem to have had their fair share! So my local Grayling fishing has been pretty much out.
So earlier this week i started to broaden my horizons. I considered the Tweed System in Scotland, the Clyde and Eden - they were all out!
So i looked at the Test & Itchen - also out and also very pricey!
I then turned to 'Flyfishing for Grayling' a book by John Roberts, that lists all the waters in the UK that contain Grayling.
Mention was made of a river in North Yorkshire. In fact in the book Roberts mentions the that the fish from this river have the fastest growth rates in the country...It was sounding good.
In fact turning the page, Roberts describes catching 3 Grayling in 10 minutes for 6lbs 1oz! Impressive. He also mentioned 3lbers - it was set - find some fishing on this beck. And i did.
So with a few friends in tow we booked the river, planning to fish Sunday. The owner of the beat wasn't optimistic - but i was set.
Saturday evening was spent in Yorkshire with swimswim and SMW sampling the York Brewery Fayre, very nice too. We also sampled a chinese. But it was raining, and heavy - it didnt look good.
We drove the fishery am on Sunday, and met the member that was Norsy ;D ;D
We were shown to our fishing lodge and told a few spots where Grayling had been seen. However the owner left us with a warning that the river had burst its banks and that it was coloured.
I didn't realise that there was such etiquette when fishing in Yorkshire, and Norsy was the only one to have met the required dress code ;D
Whereas snoremagwonder was his usual casual self ;D
In fact i declined further photos of SMW due to some ridiculous headwear
After a quick walk down to the beat - whilst it was far far from perfect we decided to give it a go, it was 180miles too far to turn around
It was difficult to know where to start, we hadn't seen the water beforem we didnt know the depths and we hadn't a clue where the fish were, so it was a matter of searching.
After an hour i latched into my first Yorkshire fish, a hard fighting fish - which was duly landed. It was a beautiful peach/pink colour - a really pretty fish.
A little further down stream and another take, this time a trout, and a d**n hard fighting fish, cart wheeling across the river and putting some good surging runs in for measure. This was a Rainbow trout, in stunning condition, fin perfect and perfectly proportioned - a fish just over 2lbs. I returned the fish quickly as they were out of season, only later to be told that they should be taken out of the river!
A little further down river, i had another Grayling, this one smaller. Swimswim then had two in consecutive casts
Note the state of the flooded river
I then met up with Norsy and SMW who hadnt had a bite. They were shocked that we had caught.
SMW then managed a Grayling from the same shoal as swimswims.
Lunch time beckoned, and part of mine and SMW's hampers disappeared. Initial complaints about the cost of the hampers were taken back, as Norsy & swimswim produced the missing food - excellent scran!
SMW without headwear
Swimswim and cakes
After lunch the rain returned, but we trudged through the mud back to the river. On my second cast i had a small Grayling around 3/4lbs. The following cast all hell broke loose.
The fish that i hooked, didn't fight deep it tore around the river making bow waves, I initially thought it was a big brown trout, until i saw its fin. This was a biggie!
Swimswim, SMW and Norsy all stood by as the fish fought hard. The calls of 'don't loose it' and 'fish of a lifetime' really got me on edge. But after a good few minutes, the fish was netted. In fact it only just fit in the net!
This was my PB - a measure 52cms - from the fork of the tail to its snout. But this fish was very broad, but so deep. I was shaking as i looked at it.
So this is my new PB
Going back - note the gin clear water
I wont comment personally on the weight of the fish, but SMW, Norsy and Swimswim all said it was over 4lbs - i wont say
So after many celebratory f*gs, it was time for Norsy to have a go, and after a few casts he landed his PB, this one a measured 40cms. This made my day!!!! ;D

and landed
So we had all caught, which was good considering the abject weather, in fact Norsy lost a big fish at the end of the day - a real rod bender.
All in all a cracker, a really brilliant day. Good friends, really lifted the mood, the conditions were hard but it didnt matter - we had a great laugh! ;D
Until next time (in fact i'll be back next week!!!)
