I had a visit to the Tanat today, it had been some years since i fished the river last, perhaps 12 yrs had gone by. Our target was the Grayling and our initial thoughts were that we were in for a good day, the only problem we could see were the leaves. However the fish were rising and the water seemed lovely. I had a lovely brown trout about 8' on my second cast, followed immediately by a fish of around 1 1/4lbs. The same pool provided another fish around the 10' mark. I then moved down stream and had a few others, including this beauty - just getting ready to spawn Again the pools seemed to contain a good number of fish and i lost a good few more. Tanat fish (as before - as the photos of the others are cr*p!) Then without warning, and with the sun blazing down the river rose, and coloured, perhaps a few feet in 30 mins. This killed the fishing! A shame considering i was confident of some good grayling from the beat. So the afternoon was spent reccying other Shropshire rivers including the Vyrnwy, Banwy, Rhiw and Camlad. A nice day out! Hoppy

Lovely shots Hoppy. It is a stunning valley is it not? For those of you who are unfamiliar with the area, it is well worth a look. The falls at Llanrhaeder-y-mochant are one of nature's masterpieces.

A lovely little river... one I used to fish for Grayling more years ago than I care to remember. There were some nice brownies and the occasional chub in the lower reaches. I have spent many happy hours on the Tanat and the Vrnwy...the Morda brook, the canal at Llanymynech.. and the host of other waters in the area....Stayed in the Black Lion in Llanymynech...used to borrow a bike off my old mate John King's sister..and away we'd go..He,He. No car in those days...

Bap, You'll have to come and have a go at the Tanat after the leaves have gone, i should imagine that Spring would be really good. Shame the beat we fished had poor access? Hoppy

Yep, I would enjoy that Hopster... I have no idea were you can get on now. Besides the pub's water,I had access to about 2miles of a private stretch, with a cracking weir pool on it, you used to get a good run of Salmon up the Tanat... I have seen the bailiffs working 24 hours a day lifting Salmon over the big weir under low water conditions... some chance of that these days. Bailiffs almost being a thing of the past.. Bap... only to my friends

Access on the GFC water is a little easier. Still a bit of a question of: "Once you're in...." but not too much effort and with some lovely pools. This was the last grayling I caught from the Tanat last year.
