Hoppy have you ever fished the River Eden for Grayling? I fished it many years ago on the Weatherall stretch and it was brill, I also fished it on the confluence of the River Irthing and had some clonking big Dace of all fish.

Very nice fish shown here, quick question..do grayling get darker in colour the larger and older they get and do they vary in shades from river to river. Glyn

Grayling colour can be influenced by a range of factors. Big fish often look darker in photos - sometimes surprisingly so, as they look as silver as the next in the water. A major contribution to the colouring of the grayling is more likely to be the substrate of the rock over which the river flows. Our Monnow grayling will often have a slight gold/red hue - strongly reflected in the dorsal, due to the presence of iron oxide in the water. Chalkstream or limestone freestone grayling will often look much paler - higher alkalinity water etc.

Cheers thanks for that, as you say quite a few of the larger fish do look darker in pics, most of the ones I have caught have been silvery. G.
