Sunday 21st , A goodly crowd ,tea and greetings done they tackle up <iset up boys rod and a quick bug up the cooks pool and I am into first of the season . Tackled up ,walk the guys down to the bottom and assign arms to fish . Neil a river virgin ,comes with boy and I along the far arm ,a little tackle adjustment a pink tiny bug and hes away with first fish ,possibly 1/2 lb.We leave him to carry on up the top stream and the feild where he later takes another on a dry ,double cherry break I think . Most of the guys had fish by lunch time but the bright sunshine and lots of watercress in the wrong places made fishing awkward. The sun and the stillness of the day made it exceeding comfortable ,lunch and a spot of red ,another couple of hours stalking producing a couple more fish . the sun drops a chill comes down and its time for a Kelly Cuppa and the long slog back into London

Andy,
Sounds great, will have to take time out to have a go on the Kennet. Out of interest what is classed as a good Grayling or Average Grayling on the River?
I only ask, as, as Tom Rigby has pointed out we tend to be spoilt around the Marches?

Hoppy,
They're all tiddlers! I remember telling him over a pint or two that we have Grayling bigger than Moy Grilse...
Andy, How did you get on on the Deveron?

Tom Deveron was tough -1 on the guage all week and mainly cloudless ,had one rather dark hen about 6lbs ,2more fish to the house including a 20 all returned . We loved the water and have rebooked for next season . a wee rise would have had the fish on the finand firing away . The Kennet grayling tend to be small but the great thing about this beat is the visual stalking of the fish and seeing the take often just yards away . Also has to be said been doing thes sundays for 5 years now and loook forward to the lunchtime banter and meetting new and old friends as much as the fishing . That said the buzz from getting a still water angler into a running water fish is something else !

Out again today ,this heavy rain has put 3\4 inches extra water on and it running dirty ,this often happens with the first big rain of the winter the color should drop out in a few days , There were fish to be taken ,the 5 rods probably had twenty odd fish ,nowt large but good fun . the weather was fair showers rather than torrential ,we even had some sunshine late aftrnoon . . Have still got 27th december and Jan 1 to go any interest ,both days good traveling days !

I think that if you are looking at Andy's Kennet Days in "size of fish caught" one has the wrong perspective. It is a delightful day with like minded buffoons, a good lunch and some fishing!
I must try to join you on a summers day again this year Andy. I have further tales to tell....
