Officers from Environment Agency Wales are currently investigating a
pollution incident on the River Sirhowy at Pontllanfraith in Caerphilly
County Borough Council. It is estimated that up to 1,000 fish, mainly
young trout have been killed on a two-kilometre stretch of the river
downstream of Gelligroes Mill.
A member of the public reported seeing some foam on the river and fish
in distress at around 1130 am today. Agency officers are at the scene
and investigations are continuing to try and locate the source of the
pollution. Water samples have been taken and will be sent for laboratory
testing. Samples of the dead fish have also been collected for
analysis.
People are urged not to touch or take away any dead fish seen in the
area.
Anyone who has information which might help our investigations can
contact us in confidence on our emergency hotline - 0800 80 70 60.
