An exhibition will be opening in Valley in April, showing proposed improvements to the Tidal Doors, which currently offer a measure of protection from flooding to the Anglesey village. Environment Agency Wales recently completed a study, which shows that improvements are needed to maintain that level of protection. At the exhibition people will be able to see details of the scheme and express their views.
The exhibition will be held at the Valley Hotel, between 10.00am - 9.00pm on Tuesday 3 April and 10.00am - 5.00pm on Wednesday 4 April. Officers from Environment Agency Wales will be present to answer questions. As far as possible comments will be taken into account when the scheme is designed in greater details.
The scheme involves a number of solutions to provide a safe and secure way of protecting Valley from flooding in the future, including:
· Replacing all three tidal flaps
· Extending the culverts on the seaward side of the embankment to provide space for holding back the river flows, so that the tidal flaps can be safely maintained in the future.
· Providing access to the top of the tidal doors structure for vehicles to help with maintenance.
· Raising the height of the wall that runs along the top of the embankment to protect it from wave overtopping damage.
· New hand railing and signage to improve health and safety for Environment Agency Wales staff and the public.
· Reconstructing the coastal footpath that runs along the structure.
The scheme will cost an estimated £1.2 million. Construction is planned for Spring 2008 and is scheduled to last approximately 20 weeks. During this time the footpath that crosses the structure will be temporarily re-routed, following the necessary approvals.
Meic Davies, Northern Area Flood Defence Manager said: "The scheme is intended to ensure that the village of Valley will be protected from flooding in the future. We are looking forward to working closely with the community."
