The Environment Agency is always on the lookout to reduce reuse and recycle. And we practice what we preach.Timber decking, used for the meeting area surrounding the Agency's main stand at this year's Royal Welsh Show will be used to build a fishing platform suitable for use by disabled anglers at a new fishery development near Brynmawr.
The project is being carried out in association with Asda, Nant y Glo Communities First, Bertdenning Group, and Lakeside Developments. The fishing platform and viewing area will overlook the lake at the former factory site near Brynmawr.
Chris Rees, Agency Wales Angling Developments Officer South East Wales spotted the opportunity to re-use the timber decking. He said:
'Bertdenning is a service for children with disabilities, and one of its aims is to engage them in community activities and initiatives. The children will help build the platform and take responsibility for its maintenance. The platform is part of a project which will include a sensory garden and developments to the existing lake to create new angling opportunities for the area, including more fishing platforms and disabled access. There are also plans to develop the former pump house into a café, fishing tackle shop and birdwatching hide.'
