Catch the action in Carmarthenshire during National Fishing Week
Experience the joys of fishing in Carmarthenshire, one of the UK's best areas for fishing, during this year's National Fishing Week, which runs from 19th to 26th August.
With spectacular scenery and diverse wildlife, this largely undiscovered region in south west Wales offers some of the most rewarding experiences for people to enjoy one of the country's favourite pastimes. Carmarthenshire has some of the most beautiful lakes and rivers in Wales featuring a rich variety of fish including sea-trout up to 15lbs.
Jamie Miller, owner of Garnffrwd Fisheries in Carmarthenshire, commented:
"I have been passionate about fishing since I was a child, and grew up fishing the lakes and rivers in Carmarthenshire. Although I have fished all over the UK, nowhere else has ever come close. Carmarthenshire is unique because it has it all - whether you want river, sea or still water fishing, the fish are top quality and Carmarthenshire cannot be beaten."
The River Towy and the River Teifi are popular destinations for anglers in Carmarthenshire and will be busy during National Fishing Week. Nia Hale, membership and marketing officer, from the Carmarthenshire Tourist Association, explains;
"At 68 miles long and with a catchment area of 500 square miles, the Towy contains a rich variety of fish including sea-trout, brown trout and salmon. Wales is renowned for its large sea trout which enter its rivers from the Irish Sea and the best sea trout fishery in Britain is located on the Towy.
"While the River Teifi, popularly known as the 'queen of the game fishing rivers,' is one of the most beautiful rivers in Wales and contains large sea trout, brown trout, salmon, bass and grayling."
Carmarthenshire boasts three main fisheries, each with their own unique character and charm:
Ricketts Mill Trout Fishery
This tranquil location, six miles west of Carmarthen, boasts two lakes stocked with a variety of fish including Brown trout and Rainbow trout, all of which are over 3lb in weight. The lakes are situated in the heart of a large wooded valley and visitors to the region can enjoy the breathtaking scenery whilst taking advantage of some of the best fishing opportunities in south Wales. Visitors planning an extended stay at the fishery have the opportunity to stay in a homely cottage nearby.
Dorinda Cottage Trout Lake
This small, private fly-fishing lake is located in a secluded valley which can be enjoyed by visitors staying at Dorinda Cottage. An overnight stay at the self-catering cottage costs just £50 and the picturesque lake is suitable for both beginners and experienced fishers alike.
Garnffrwd Trout Fishery
This stunning, five-acre lake, situated in the heart of Carmarthenshire, offers anglers a tranquil and relaxing fishing experience. Built in 1982, the lake is surrounded by woodland and features a diverse collection of wildlife. Accommodation is available in the form of log cabins situated on the edge of the woodland. Alternatively visitors can stay in Cerrig Cottage, a charming 18th century converted stone barn.
