Marine boom on Menai Strait
The joint Liaison Group of all the relevant authorities dealing with the Menai Strait oil pollution has taken special measures to do everything possible to try and prevent a further incident.
A protective boom has been placed around the area in front of the outfall pipe identified as the source of the two recent oil pollution incidents. The pipe is connected to the drainage system at a semi - derelict factory site near Caernarfon. This is a precautionary measure in case further heavy rainfall causes more oil to be flushed through the system.
Since the first incident two weeks ago, there has been a major clean-up operation on site to remove oil from tanks and pipework. Specialist contractors have already cleared over 60 tons of oil from the system. The clean-up operation, which includes scouring out the whole of the site drainage system, is expected to take about another two weeks to complete.
The Group confirms that surveys of the foreshore have revealed little environmental impact but they are continuing to monitor the situation on a daily basis.
