Scouts challenge local AM in angling session
1st Llandovery Scouts had a great day out at an angling participation event organised by Environment Agency Wales. Local AM Rhodri Glyn Thomas also came along to take part in
the special fly fishing sessions.
The event was held at Pantybedw Fishery, Nantgaredig and over 15 scouts enjoyed fly fishing sessions with each scout successfully catching a rainbow trout.
The event was held to further develop the Scouts fly-fishing techniques and help them towards achieving their Scouts Angler Badge. Qualified angling coaches from local angling clubs were on hand to offer help and advice.
We expressed our gratitude to the owners of Pantybedw, Ian and Sue Williams for the use of their facilities on the evening. The rainbow trout fishery fished particularly well during the evening with many fish rising around the scouts, further encouraging the keen anglers.
Speaking at the event, Rhodri Glyn Thomas, AM for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr said: “I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this fishing event with the scouts. I admire the range of activities that the scouts participate in and the work they carry out. Taking part in angling events such as this, the scouts can appreciate the outdoors. Recognition must also be given to Environment Agency Wales for organising the event for the Scouts.”
Philip Morgan, a local Fisheries Officer, with the Agency said:
“The main aim of this event is to coach the scouts the technique of fly fishing and to ensure that they continue and take up the sport of fishing. Angling is a healthy and worthwhile pastime and is a totally inclusive sport. It was a pleasure seeing so many young keen anglers outside in the countryside and enjoying themselves.”
Scout Leader, Nigel Coal added: “The scouts and myself would like to pass on our sincerest thanks to Environment Agency Wales and the coaches present for helping arrange the event.
This fishing experience has helped the scouts gain the Angler Badge. Both scouts and parents thoroughly enjoyed the evening and I am sure we will have a number of new anglers amongst our group.”
