Menai Strait – update
The investigation into the source of an eight-mile oil slick affecting the Menai Straits is continuing today. The oil is thought to be a mixture of diesel and heating oil.
The investigation is focused on a private sewer pipe in an area close to a semi-abandoned factory site between Plas Menai and Victoria Dock.
The pollution was reported to Environment Agency Wales early yesterday (Sunday 25/06/06) morning. We are working with local councils, Countryside Council for Wales and the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) in an operation to deal with the situation.
The source of the pollution was located and isolated yesterday. No detergents are being used, as the nature of the oil means that natural wave action and evaporation should reduce and disperse the oil.
It is too early to assess what environmental impact there could be following this incident, but all agencies are closely monitoring the situation at present. Members of the public are requested not to walk on the shoreline between Plas Menai, Griffiths Crossing and Victoria Dock, Caernarfon.
