Royal visitor to Angling Zone event in south Wales
There was a royal visitor at a recent (26 May) angling participation event, organised by Environment Agency Wales’s South East Area staff. The Celtic Challenge 2006 event was visited by HRH The Earl of Wessex, KCVO, ADC. 250Youngsters from the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme took part in various activities at Cwrt y Gollen army ground near Crickhowell, Powys. The Angling Zone involved a stop watch challenge to assemble a fishing rod and placing golf balls in buckets at increasing distances using a fishing pole. Professional angling club coaches were on hand to assist experienced agency staff in delivering hands-on practical fishing tuition.
Agency research has shown that the main factors that discourage people from taking up fishing are: • Not knowing where to fish • No information on how to start • Lack of suitable equipment.
After the event, Roger Watkins, Agency Fisheries Officer said: ‘This was a great event to be involved in. The youngsters were very enthusiastic, and keen to complete the challenges in the shortest time. Getting involved with fishing has far reaching benefits. Initiatives around the country have shown how angling can reduce youth crime and school truancy, improve behaviour, educational achievement and generally lift self-esteem for those who take part.‘
