Not having bought a rod licence prior to fishing has landed an Ellesmere Port man with a bill of £330 in fines and costs. Stephen Wilson of Hawthorne Road, Little Sutton was seen fishing at Burton Mere, Burton on 29 August 2005. The case was proved in his absence at Chester Magistrates Court on 10 April 2006. He was fined: · £60 for the licence offence, under Section 27(a) of the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975 (SFFA ’75).
· £200 for giving false details, contrary to Section 35(3) of SFFA ’75. He was also ordered to pay £70 in costs to Environment Agency Wales who brought the prosecution.
An Environment Agency spokesman said: ‘ We rely on the income from sales of rod licences to invest in improvements to fisheries. By seeking to avoid buying a licence this individual was depriving fellow anglers of this much-needed income. Why risk a fine? Buy a licence before starting to fish. Our enforcement officers will continue to carry out checks, and we will prosecute offenders as necessary.’
