Dolgellau schoolchildren hooked on fishing!
Environment Agency Wales, working with Dolgellau Angling Association, held an introduction to angling event recently at Llyn Cynwch, near Dolgellau.
Despite the cold and blustery wind the children and their parents showed remarkable enthusiasm and determination to catch their first fish.
Star of the day was 9 year old Mari Lloyd from Machreth Primary School, who, with a little help from mum, caught two trout which included the biggest of the day, a beautifully marked brown trout weighing just over a pound.
Encouraged by their success, mother and daughter have joined the Dolgellau Angling Association and look forward to many more enjoyable days together at the waterside.
Our fisheries staff also brought along a sample of invertebrate animals to show the children the different types of life found in the lake. Equipped with magnifying glasses the children were able to get a close up view of the creepy crawlies found on the lakebed.
Our fisheries officers, together with Federation of Welsh Anglers coaches, demonstrated fly casting, fly dressing and stillwater trout fishing methods.
The event was advertised at local primary schools in the Dolgellau area. 20 children between the ages 5-11 attended the event.
We wish to thank all that attended and helped run the event and special thanks to Dolgellau Angling Association for providing the venue for the day.
Anyone interested in fishing at Llyn Cynwch can contact Dolgellau Angling Association 01341 422706 for day permits and membership details or log on to www.dolgellauanglingassociation.co.uk
