TAPP-ing into the benefits of angling
A new Environment Agency Wales led project aimed at encouraging young people in Torfaen to go fishing is being launched at Cwmbran Boating Lake at 10.30am on Thursday 27 April.
The Torfaen Angling Participation Project (TAPP) is a partnership between Environment Agency Wales, Sports Council for Wales, Torfaen County Borough Council, and four angling clubs in the Torfaen Area. The partners aim to deliver a pilot project which it is hoped can form the basis of similar schemes throughout Wales and beyond.
You are invited to send representatives to the launch of the Torfaen Angling Participation Project at Cwmbran Boating Lake at 10.30am, Thursday 27 April 2006.
At the launch, a £10,000 cheque from the Sports Council for Wales will be presented to the project. A group from Abersychan Special School will then hopefully get hooked as they are
given an introduction to the sport.
Similar projects around the country have shown how angling can reduce youth crime and school truancy, improve behaviour, educational achievement and generally lift self-esteem
for those who take part.
The project aims to introduce 500 people to angling and will involve introductory fishing days for people from all sectors of society, irrespective of gender, race and ability. Cwmbran
Boating Lake and Garn yr Erw Lakes, Blaenavon have been identified as suitable central locations. Environment Agency Wales staff will be on hand to offer help and advice. Our research has shown that the main factors that discourage people from taking up fishing are:
• Not knowing where to fish
• No information on how to start
• Lack of suitable equipment.
At the introductory days a programme of angling skills, water safety and environmental awareness will be on offer. Participants will be shown a number of fishing methods, demonstrated by the qualified coaches. Some of the participating clubs have expertise in certain coaching areas, for example in fly-tying, and it is hoped that they will pass their skills on to other clubs.
