Of the Marine on salmon drift net approaches
In answer to questions tabled in both the House of Lords and the House of Commons the British government has confirmed that it “regularly impresses upon the Irish Government the need to take steps to reduce and eventually eliminate the impact of the Irish drift net fishery on UK salmon stocks”. The questions had been tabled by Lord Maginnis of Drumglass in the Lords and by Mr Desmond Swayne MP (New Forest West) and by Mr Hywell Williams MP (Caernarfon) in the Commons.
In reply to Lord Maginnis, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Lord Bach (on 10 February) said that Mr Ben Bradshaw, the Minister for Fisheries, had discussed the issue with the Irish Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources “on a number of occasions” and had “urged on the Irish Minister the need to take steps to reduce the impact of the salmon drift net fishery on salmon returning to English and Welsh rivers”.
Similarly replies had been given by Mr Bradshaw himself in the House of Commons on 19 and 30 January.
The statements made to the British Parliament directly contradict a statement issued by the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources to RTE’s Five Seven Live programme on 4 January 2006. In this statement the Department asserted that “no EU Government has to date raised this issue [ie the interception of salmon by Irish drift nets] with the Irish Government”.
