Scouts fish for badges
Environment Agency Wales recently hosted a ‘Have a go at Fishing’ event for Llandovery 1st Division Scouts at Pantybedw Fishery, Nantgaredig. The event was held to introduce the Scouts to fly-fishing and help them towards achieving their Scouts Angler Badge.
The Angler Badge, which is sponsored by the Agency, requires the pupils to gain an understanding of all aspects of angling, the aquatic environment and the role of the Environment Agency.
The day started with a talk on health and safety aspects of angling, the golden rules of angling, angling craft and waterside awareness. This was followed by an introduction to fly fishing tackle and then a demonstration and practice session on the technique of casting.
In the afternoon the scouts were allowed to put their new skills to the test and fish for rainbow trout. All the scouts successfully caught their first fish. Both boys and girls from the group showed great enthusiasm and interest in the sport.
Philip Morgan, Environment Agency Fisheries Officer said: “The main aim of these events is to introduce the sport of angling to people who wouldn’t ordinarily think of giving it a go.
Angling is a healthy and worthwhile pastime and is a totally inclusive sport. It does not discriminate against gender, race, age or athletic ability. It was a pleasure seeing so many young anglers outside in the countryside and enjoying themselves.”
Nigel Coal, Scout Leader First Division Llandovery said: “The scouts and myself would like to pass on our sincerest thanks to the staff of Environment Agency Wales for arranging the event. Thanks must also be given to the angling coaches from the Agency, Peter Thurnall and Philip Morgan. This fishing experience will help the scouts enormously as they work towards gaining the Angler Badge. Both boys and girls thoroughly enjoyed the day and I am sure we will have a number of new anglers amongst our group.”
WHAT A GREAT VENTURE - WELL DONE TO ALL CONCERNED Hoppy
