A recent thread on the FFF mentions controls regarding the spreading of sludge / slurry near watercourses. I found this particularly interesting as a section of the Teifi I fish at Abercych runs through meadows that are heavily 'slurried'. I've followed the links on the EA site and found the following text - I've emboldened the parts that I find particularly relevant.
Spreading Controls
Spread nitrogen fertilisers and organic manure evenly and accurately to the cropped area. Do not apply organic manure within 10 metres of watercourses or in a way that contaminates watercourses. Do not apply nitrogen fertilisers or organic manure when the soil is waterlogged, flooded, frozen hard or snow covered or to steeply sloping fields. Closed Periods
Do not apply any manufactured nitrogen fertilisers on land not in grass from 1 September to 1 February and on grassland from 15 September to 1 February, unless there is a specific crop requirement. Do not apply slurry, poultry manures or liquid digested sewage sludge on shallow or sandy soils: between 1 September and 1 November to fields in grass or to be sown with an autumn sown crop, or between 1 August and 1 November to fields not in grass, nor to be sown with an autumn sown crop.
10 meters eh - not on waterlogged soil? I think we'd better keep an eye on the lower Teifi!

That's why the river turned green in 2006! and to think its our water supply too!!
Lately whilst walking the dog, I have come across many many little streams that are being filled with water running off surrounding fields and straight from farms down roads and into the Teifi in a matter of minutes. I shudder to think of the amount of nitrates and shit that enters the river.
S
PS I'm also awaiting confirmation from the EA about an alledged pollution incident on the Teifi in 2006. I will post on this in the next few days.

Hi Paul, the meadows you mention are they on the left bank down to the Cych Junction Pool and either side of the lane leading down to the ford over the Cych? Have you seen the farmer spreading slurry? Would be interested to know.
Steve.

Paul, what time of the year did you see him spreading slurry? I have seen him spreading muck from his cattle sheds prior to ploughing and sowing but never liquids. Steve.
