Have finally managed to agree terms with the lodge for the 2008 season on the Rio Grande, and am placing the trip details here for all those that are interested. Everything will need to be confirmed over the next few weeks in order for us to secure the best dates, so please raise your interest asap.
There are a few tangents to play around with, which I hope equates to something to fit everyone that’s interested.
I’m sure that you would have seen the trip report from Feb 2007, if not I will paste it as a separate posting.
The fishing! The fishing will be very flexible and will allow for groups within a party to form if there were split agendas etc. when at the lodge. If you wanted to fish the entirety of your stay on the Grande, no problem. However, I would highly recommend a visit to the lakes, and would probably work on a 2 day visit to the lakes as part of the packages.
A couple of pointers about the fishing on the lodge where we are going which should seed some interest:
1. The owner of the lodge has given me permission to advertise the fact that given that people who attend this package will have a modicum of night-fishing experience we will be allowed to fish the river at night, if the conditions dictate. This is unheard of on the river, and is an unique opportunity – I have fished the river at night 2 seasons ago, and it was awesome!
2. All the fish taken on the 2007 trip from the grande were taken on floating lines (sometimes with poly-tips), it is not bottom dreading with 300 grain lines. Also, all of the fish were taken in daylight, which makes a change with sea-trout fishing. They take readily in the daytime, and you are unlikely to hook a sea-trout of under 6lbs!
3. We will be fishing on the Chilean side of the Grande, which is much more picturesque, and has a lot less wind, which the grande is infamous for.
4. The Chilean side gives far better sport for the resident fish; browns and rainbows. It also allows us access the prime of the lake fishing. We fished a lake in 2007 that required permission from the military to gain access, the lodge now has a boat on this lake! Which is incredible news. This lakes also allows us to have a go for the Charr, and fish a very unknown river!
Here are the options available:
1. Option 1: Golden Dorado and Piranha fishing in Northern Argentina. This can be undertaken prior to going to the Grande, or upon our return to Buenos Aires. If this is of interest to anyone then please let me know – I will try and sort prices out for this asap. This would be a 3-6 day fishing package.
2. Rio Grande, 6 days: 6 days fishing, 6 nights lodge accommodation – full board, all inclusive. Includes; fully guided, transfers from Rio Grande town, all food and drink. Also included; hotel accommodation in Buenos Aires and Rio Grande (as required), so that there aren’t any hidden extras to account for. Total cost of the package, per person: £1,900
3. Rio Grande, 9 days: details as for 2. £2,500
4. Rio Grande, 12 days: details as for 2. £3,000
5. A mix of the Rio Grande and the Piranha package.
6. Other tangents can be explored, as necessary.
These prices do not include flight costs, which should be in the region of £750 for a return flight from London, and includes around 25-32 kilos of luggage allowance! These prices won't need to be paid in full immediately, but will discuss that with interested parties.
Suggested times would be: end of February / beginning of March.
You will not be able to find a cheaper package than this, as I am actually providing it at a cost which is below what the lodge advertises it itself! I have a great working relationship with them, which allows me to provide this – but it does rely on achieving the group numbers.
We need 6 people for one group (I will attend as the 7th person), but it would be great if we could get 2 groups over there over the 2 week+ stay. There are a few confirmed names already, but still room if there is interest. Only 4 people would be required for the Golden Dorado, as that lodge allows some more flexibility.
Please send me a PM if you are interested, or raise your interest here. I will be corresponding with the interested parties further and will be providing the additional information, including the flies, tackle etc etc. and any further details of relevance.
Best wishes,
TT.

After being forced to fish for a solid 3 weeks I have finally returned. Armed with 1,600 photos and roughly the same amount of stories from the trip! We had an incredible time, as I’m sure the following diary and photos will indicate. Firstly, the Dorado and Piranha! Nutters would be the best word used to describe them both, they were mentalists! The Dorado; for their initial take, fighting quality, and acrobatic display I am hooked, didn’t land any over 8lbs but to be quite honest anything much over that would be a serious challenge on an 8 weight. Any salmonoid that can bite through 20lbs, 49 strand stainless steel wire has my utmost respect and undivided attention! I hooked 19 on the first day, landing just 4! There’s me thinking sea-trout were bad. I fished in 2 very different areas and with 2 different lodges, both of which offered and provided something very different. The first was on the Pirana river and its tributaries. Wow, what a river. When faced with the river, which was in flood, typical, I told the guide; “this is the biggest river I’ve ever seen” to which he replied; “what you see in front of you is an island, the main channel is the other side of that”! Supposedly it was 15km wide where we were fishing! A bit far to wade across. Even with the high flows (a flood means a different thing on a river of this immensity) the fishing was pretty good and the guide put me over fish, my fault for being a numty and not landing them. The second lodge was in the Iberian Marshlands, a spectacular place, very rich in wildlife with nature popping out of every crevice – never seen so many partridges! The fishing here was some 150km from the Brazilian border, and the river was at summer levels. The fishing was first class in the morning and the evenings. The river was rife with piranha, which soon lose their appeal. 2 flies = one piranha, and after taking around 15 minutes to dress each fly before the trip you soon learn to lift the fly out of the water once it gets into dead water. However, piranha, once you managed to get one hooked, are superb fighters with a very dogged fight, much like that of a trevally. The temperature was a warming 30-35 degrees, which made a pleasant change from the wet and cold weather I left at home. Mosquitoes were few and far between, thank god. The food, wine, and company were superb. I will be back for more of that! Here are some photos from the first leg of the trip. Before long it was time to return to Buenos Aires and meet up with the boys for the second leg of the trip; Tierra Del Fuego. We eventually met up in the town of Rio Grande after the boys incurred a delay. Not wasting any time we went to a river I knew not too far away that I had fished before, and I knew held reasonable levels of; brown, rainbow, sea-trout, and brook-charr. We fished for half a day and caught 12 sea-trout, with the largest of the day, a fish of around 15lbs, parting company with me. Great start to the trip nevertheless. We also had residents up to around 3lbs. Here are some shots from that one: It was then time to venture forth to the Grande. I firstly caught up with a good mate who was fishing Maria Behty, he had caught fish up to 18lbs on the few days before we had arrived, and was understandably overjoyed. The Grande did not disappoint us either, with Stargazer getting a 12lbs fresh fish on his very first cast on the river! What a start. We fished the Grande for 4 days, and managed on average 2-3 fish a day each, with the smallest being around the 6lbs mark (the Grande fish are notoriously broad and deep, where a 4lb fish on most rivers would equate to a 6lbs fish on the Grande). Here are some photos from the Grande: We then ventured into some ‘out in the sticks’ places I knew. This was the best part of the trip for me as I just love exploring and applying myself to relatively untested waters. We fished 4 lakes in all, all of which provided immense sport. A couple of my Chilean friends accompanied us on the first lake, and we decided to have a friendly competition. Brits vs. Chileans, there was only one outcome! He he. Brits 24 Chileans 2. The smallest one landed from the lake was around the 3lb mark, with the largest being in the 7-8lb range. Incredible fishing. Each one a power packed brute that doubled the 5 weight rods over for a good 10-15 minutes before submitting. I landed 8 from another one of the lakes we fished, of which none were under 4-5lbs! with Stargazer losing the largest of the day, a fish that would have easily gone 10lbs+ (it was on the shingle before it shot back through his legs embedding the dropper in his leg and snapping the line! His fault for having his legs open - Well, he is from Neath! ) Here are some photos from that leg of the trip: We then fished a immensely beautiful lake, which had an outflow where sea-trout ran - a perfect combination. The lake itself provided exhilarating sport with brook-charr to around 4-5lbs, which provide some of the hardest fights imaginable, I was using 10lbs nylon and an 8 weight rod; their heads just could not be lifted. We also got some rainbows, browns and sea-trout from the lake. A real mixed bag. Here are some shots from that one, a real paradise and far from civilisation: To encapsulate the trip; awesome, but after 3 weeks of fishing I’m ready for a holiday! Hope you enjoy the photos guys, I have kept the writing to a minimum as I think a photo speaks a thousand words. But any questions you have just ask. TT.

Please stop this torment! Imagine the torment when we return with the photos of the 2008 trip W&S ;D you'll be hiring a hitman! he he. We have reached a sufficient number for a group I'm pleased to report, so the trip will be going ahead. If there is anyone else interested then you will need to let me know within the next 2 weeks, as we really need to secure the best weeks now. Further to that, there has been interest in a 2009 trip already, and there is a significant sized group 'penciled' in. If anyone would be interested in a 2009 trip then get in contact, as I will be trying to sort out the pricing for that asap, which will allow people to pay in installments and allows more time to save. It will be at a similar time again - last week of February, first two weeks of March. Best wishes. TT.

With a daughter at university and a son still to follow, this type of break is out of my price bracket even for 2009 So I'm relying on other members to make this a very popular annual event so that in 5 years when I can afford it, it'll still be going. ;D Or I could 'borrow' one of the kids student loans

Here goes my first post. I've been to Argentina on three separate occasions staying at the Bella Vista lodge on the Rio Gallegos. The best advice I can give is to tie your flies on strong hooks pref Carp or Gamakatsu. To date all the fish I have caught have been on my own flies the most successful of which being my variations on Prince Nymphs,Rubber legged Yuk Bugs as well as the deadly String Leech. On my last trip we were advised that that doubles were no longer permitted on the Gallegos and that all flies should be barbless singles it would be worth checking if the Rio Grande has applied the same rules. The fishing is out of this world coupled with the best steak and lamb I've ever eaten(sorry Taffs). Also don't forget to spend some time In Buenos Aires if only to watch the pretty girls go by. If any on wants to pick my brains such as they are please contact me. [img src=" "]

You came up with this fly didn't you Daze, saw it in Flyfishing & Flytying magazine and tied up a few. Great fly, and the fish sure like them too. My name is Al so I think it's quite suitable. Hope you don't mind.
