Hi,
After a hours fishing (anything between 2-4 hours) I get lower back pains that start from tolerable and move onto severe.
Presently I am using an orthopedic support (1' in depth with aluminium struts) but to be honest it's too big and doesn't give me the mobility needed.
Can anyone help - I see alot of branded supports out there going from affordable up to big bucks -what is a decent support to use at a realistic price?
Thanks,

Hi there lb1, I use a Simms back support, saw it one day in Sportfish and decided to give it a try. At the time I thought it was expensive for what it was but it worked a treat, and still does. I've had it for a number of years now and I think they have a "better" one, at least more expensive on the market. Hope this helps. Cap

I have a Loop version which is a foam small of the back shaped pad worn on a belt. Does the trick. I used to just get stiffness but it sounds as your problem maybe more serious. I would have a look at the Simms, i think they are about £40.

I'm the same as lancsflyman, it's mostly when spinning or if I've been fly fishing all day that my lower back does get it, but the Simms back support really does help me. Cap

The SIMMs Black Magic wading belt is what I use, frankly its a Sports version of a full orthopaedic one but it does the biz. Comfortable too ( and it holds my gut in ).
Not cheap at £49.99 but then neither are pain free days.

lb1, Have a look on ebay, you will find some very good ones on there at some good prices. had a full orthopedic one that works well for me, and the cost was £9.99. so have a look there first before spending lots of money.. Dai

lb1, ...With regard to your lower spine pain when fishing; a support will certainly give some relief, but it might be better, long-term, to treat the cause rather than the effect.
Speaking from personal experience, I can say that, if you are getting severe problems after only an hours' fishing, then there is an underlying problem there which needs to be sorted sooner, rather than later.
It may be just a simple matter like your posture when casting-like reaching too far back, or the reverse, i.e. crouching, which I am often guilty of! It could be that you are twisting the body from the waist rather excessively, in an effort to get extra distance. All these things put an undue load where one was not designed to be, but things which you can cure yourself of. I am not suggesting for an instant, that you need casting tuition, but sometimes, a professional eye, or a friend watching you cast, can quickly point out anything obvious like that, which might be the root cause...
Problems with the lower back are signs that something is wrong there and take it from me,-don't ignore them, for they do not mend quickly and should never be antagonised. It might be worth investing in a half-hours' professional advice now, rather than wait and see what happens...
...In the meantime, a good temporary relief, is one of those broad belts which weight-lifters wear, available from sports shops. Worn under the coat, it would be unseen...
Hope this may be of some help..

I suffered from the lower back thing years ago, bought a heavy lifting support in the states from HOME DEPOT,the kind the staff wear.Trouble was,I found that this just transferred the pain to above and below the belt.So.....I splashed out on a visit to the chiro and they told me it was nothing to do with my back,it was caused by my posture (thank you watermole) and specifically the arches of my feet. They gave me a pair of ORTHOTIC insoles which banged the back on the head,as it were. These orthotics are now available from chemists, boots has them, and I would suggest that you might try this route. I however have to wear calipers to stand a all now but thats another story. Its a toss up between me and SI for the title of the ill-est man in sea trouting

Thanks again.
WM - Its a combination of several things - being over 186cm,bad posture, stopping too many sauces from curdling, sitting in front of a computer too long, not lifting from the knees, thinking I'm still in my teens.Seen Chiropractors and got cracked around and they all say the same - "Take better care of yourself".
Fly casting lessons is definitely on the menu. There have been some really positive threads about getting your techniques nailed down - feel its my time to do it.
Shocker - Othotic soles - could well be another reason so will investigate.
