Gents, I wonder if anyone on here could help / offer me some advice please. I am going to Canada on a fishing holiday later this year, I have never done such a thing before. My question is; are there any restrictions on taking tackle with you on a flight, i.e, hooks, accessories etc etc. Dont know if this is a stupid question, or if it is my mind doing overtime already!! Any advice gratefully received! Many thanks, Leighton

Anything "remotely risky" - lines, leader, flies, snips etc put in the hold. If you're talking about equipment limits or surcharges best speak to your carrier first as they vary quite a bit. TT is bound to have some additional info - what with his fishing playboy jet-setting lifestyle... J

TT is bound to have some additional info - what with his fishing playboy jet-setting lifestyle... Rumours, all rumours! ;D Leighton; JT' advice is sound, anything that you think is risky put it in your main 'hold' baggage. You can get away with it, but it's not worth risking - I once had some grip leads (sea fishing) in my hand baggage on the way back from Ireland, you should see them under an x-ray!! I would have called security myself! ;D I did once, by accident, leave some large jigs in my hand baggage on the way back from Croatia, but it was only when I said that I didn't mind leaving them behind that they let me take them through. But if they threatened to take one of my fly boxes I would cry! So definitely put such items in the hold. I always take my reels in my hand baggage and have never had a problem with them/it. I did manage to get my rods on-board once before too, but this is more risky and I would advise getting some 4 piece rods and placing them inside your main hold baggage. Hope that helps. TT.

Thanks Gents,
I was thinking along the same lines as you both to be honest. I am considering purchasing a bag specifically for destination fishing, the type that takes 10' 3 PC rods in tubes. airflo have got a good one. And its a good excuse to go on another trip to get use out of the bag !!!
As for reels and lines, Im not taking my "best" gear, its all 5 weight stuff, so they are not on my good set up.
Steff, have you been to the Alberta area of Canada fishing? My missus has got some family out there, so I have free accommodation for 3 weeks - spare cash to spend on fishing the rivers for wild brown trout in the high 20" range - nice!
Anyway, thanks again.
Regards, Leighton

Afraid not Leighton, did have an offer to visit there last year, but time got the best of me It's certainly on the to-do list though, perhaps this year. Let us know how you get on anyway. Steff.

I cant wait to be honest Steff, by the reports & photos that I have seen it should be well worth the effort & money. One website that I visited described the fishing as "the next best brown trout fishing to New Zealand" we shall wait and see, personally I think that it is totally different to NZ. but who the hell am I ?
Shall let you know how I get on, hopefully with photos of some cracking browns in the high 20" range!
Diolch,
Leighton.

On a recent trip to Ireland I was told by security that Icould take a reel as long as It did not have any line on it!Apparently line could be used to tie up passengers in a terrorist attack.Iknow of other anglers who have not been allowed to take reels containing line. You may get away with it but it would be a shame to have to put your expensive fly line in the bin.

I've heard the same scenario before Trinamadan, but never actually heard of anyone having to do that? If you have enough weight allowance then throw it in the hold, but I rarely do. Again, never had a problem with my reels being in my hand-luggage, and I do a fair few trips in a year. Have had people inspect them and ask what they are, but never anything further - perhaps my 'baby face' helps! ;D TT.

If there were a tongue in cheek smiley I would have put it on this one, surely they would let you take a reel with line on wouldn't they?

Steff,
As you say, its going to be a great trip whatever.
With regards to the reels, I will put them in the hold with the rest of my kit, that should be ok I hope!
Hope I still have a baby face at the end of August then!!!!!
Thank you all for your replies.

Just to make comment on reels in hand baggage, in Cardiff airport last year. customs made me take three reels out of my hand luggage as they had line on them, they seem to think that you could string some one up with it. Dai

Honestly, Gwyniadun Iam not joking.Ispent £3oo on 2 rods and a pair of waders so that Icould leave them in Ireland where Ispend a fair bit of fishing time-several weeks per year .Ithought Iwould be able to take my reels in hand baggage and not have to bother with any cases for checking in which costs about £10 per trip or carrying rods which cost another £15 per trip[each way]It is also very easy to clock up excess baggage carrying heavy items like waders. The security man at Derry airport told me about the restrictions on carrying reels with line.I recently read in T.&S of other anglers being told the same regulations at different air ports.

I guessed that there would be a few incidents that people have had, thats the whole reason why I started this thread - just to see what can happen! If it can go wrong, it will go wrong for me.
Dai, did they let you put the reels into your luggage that went into the hold?
Wonder if my missus will let me hide some of my fishing kit in her case? !! Doubt it, did you know that all fishing tackle "stinks". According to her it does.

Leighton,
No they would not let me put reels in my main bags as they had gone thought, and had to put my hand bag in hold, did not want to do it as i had £3,000 of camera gear in it. but it was that or leave it at air port, luckily all got thought to other side OK.

Trinamadan, I know I've had the same, I carry them in the Hold Bagage...it was a reply to 'Terrorist' due to his comment. ;D ;D Missed the context Gwilym, or was/am I having a blonde moment (more than probable!)? Anyway, as stated, put in the hold if that's your preference, or keep it in your hand luggage if you look innocent! ;D TT.

TT, read it again then 'SAM'. You being a 'Terrorist' and all that .... wouldn't it make sense to allow you to take your reels and lines in your on flight bag. Blonde moment? possibly more like reverse psychology on me.... but there you go!

;D indeed! ok, got the measure of it now! ;D
On a more serious note, the reel issue got me thinking; what if the line was taped over? or, had a sweat band placed over the spool? hiding the line? Or am I being daft? (more than probable, again!)
TT.
