I would be interested to know what water proof jacket folks use, I like a lot of people I'm sure, got conned into buying a Geys GRX breathable and supposedly totally waterproof state of the art wading jacket. It's about as waterproof as a teabag, anything but the lightest of showers and it soaks through and not even slightly waterproof.

My bank jacket is a Sportchief Aquatex 3/4 lengths, too long for the boat or wading but completely weather proof, I used it in Alaska, apart from from that its heavy.

I have a G3 at the moment, it's doing the buisness. If it lasts as long as the old Simms Guide jacket then I'll be quite happy. One note on the Guide, after the introduction of the G3 by Simms they replaced the gore-tex XCR with their standard Gore-tex in this jacket,(have you noticed the price drop). It's still a fantastic coat, but I wouln't like to pit it against the rains of April in B.C. for too long. What about the waders then, has anybody tried the new G4'S. I though, great, a zipper up the front, it'll do me, after losing half your guts, it's a great idea when duty calls about 5-6 times in a day. took a pair out with me last April, they leaked , but not in the zip, the right leg, lucky I had my old ones with me. took them back to Fishtec in Brecon and they replaced them there and then no questions asked, bloody fantastic service.

I've got the new Klobba wading jacket, Two very ample chest pockets, two fleece lined hand pockets, telephone cable type zingers on the front (ala fishpond), Expandable pouch on back, neoprene cuffs, very good stowable hood with stiffened storm visor. very reasonably priced, I managed to catch it in a sale, so was VAT free. This was put through it's paces one very very wet night on the nith and passed with flying colours. Have to see about longevity though. secure.legend.co.uk/yga/acatalog/Jackets__Bodywarmers__Pullovers_and_Fleeces.html

Bad Weather? We don't get bad weather down here The advantage of this stuff is that it costs so little by comparison with the posh purpose made clothing. It gets a bit commando here on our small rivers, so it's good to wear something you don't mind thrashing on the barbed wire and brambles. Same reason I only buy crappy £20 nylon chest waders. God I must horrify the wife when she sees me heading out, looking like the love-child of Humpty Dumpty and Rambo. At least it's dark so the neighbours don't get too shocked. Though I'm swapping over to salmon fishing from now until mid-December so She may try to ban me from going out at all unless I smarten up my act.

I must say, quite a few fishermen look as if they've just stepped out of a clothes shop window, me included, but I've had too many drenches on cold and wet outings in supposedly waterproof clothing over the years to justify the cost of expensive rain gear(my view). My last coat was a Simms guide, which I've had since they were introduced. It's just gone to Simms Europe to be overhauled and on it's return will be my standby in case my G4 fails. Yes, they are expensive and you do pay over the odds for the garments but quite a bit of research goes into the materials and laminating processes involved in the manufacture of these so called breathables which the companies have to recoup somehow. Add to that the after sales service (yes you pay for that as well) in the price of the garment, and when I'm up to my armpits in some faraway river I like to think that the money I've spent has been worthwhile and it keeps me dry and warm, and doesn't let me down when it's needed the most. Cap ;D ;D
