Snapped rods Having read the report by preston66; his misfortune of breaking his rod while Spey casting . I thought I post a tread about the importance of taping up the Rod joints; especially when night fishing . Over the years I have broke a number of rods; because of my failure to tape up rod joints. Taping joints will not only prevents this from happening’ but will also prolong the life of the rod; the twisting motion that Spey casting; puts a strain on joints wearing them down. Electrical tape one or two rolls’ will do you for the season, there are small and don’t take up much room in your jacket, you will only use about an inch at a time; so well worth the effort. Breaking a rod isn’t the end of the world having to pack up fishing because of it’ is. ;D ;D Bandon

I snapped a Greys Prodigy spinning rod a couple of weeks after I bought it but it broke above the joint, not on it. They replaced the top section without question. Is it common for rods to break at joints? If so, I'm going to have to spend a while taping up my 7-piece travel rod every time I use it... and what tape is best?

I haven't had a fly rod snap since a glass fibre one snapped mid cast in my early teens (touch wood).
But having a 14ft beachcaster 'fold' while hurtling 5oz of lead into the distance did scare me a little so these days if using heavy weights in rough conditions I tend to put a bit of gaffer tape around the joint.
Spinning rods and car doors are another matter though- two 7ft Daiwa Samurai's in the space of a year- Smashing little rods for upstream worming as well.
