Every now and then everyone has a bad day...... or two! Today has not been a good day for me. I'm a teacher, one of my 9 year olds has been excluded for 3 days - his second exclusion this year. It's also been a long day - I've just got in tonight after a governors meeting at another school - a lovely and successful village school - that had £6000 of digital projectors and lap tops stolen last night. Enough to make you weep tears of dispair and anger. However, when I got home I was presented with a long tube, courtesy of Ebay and inside............. a blank, a Batson Rainshadow, 9ft, 3wt! Suddenly, I'm transported, I'm on the Teifi on a warm night in July, the shoalies are in and I'm fishing with this whisp of a rod and the next moment a pound plus fish is bouncing all over the river! Isn't that the great thing about fishing? What bad day?

On the subject of rod building and what is possible, the link below will take you to the R B Meiser site. This builder is held in high regard, particularly by some of the more experienced and discerning posters on the FFF. Meiser's primary market is clearly the US and this explains the 'cosmetics' of many of his rods - a touch fancy for our more restrained European tradition. However, they are not only beautiful examples of the rod builder's 'art' but also highly prized and functional fishing rods. Would I like to own one? Let me think............. www.meiserflyrods.com/gallery.html

Having a bid at the 5wt! Paul i'll be needing help in Feb! No problem! It's a lot less difficult than a lot of people imagine - a bit of care and patience and the results can be very acceptable. Here's one of my ongoing 'projects'. It's the butt section of a 3 piece Loomis IMX, 9' 9", 8wt that I've been putting together for ages now (I have rather a lot of rods on the go at the moment - I really must get to finish some before I start another!). So far the butt section has only received one coat of epoxy so it's not yet in its 'finished' state. Rod building is the natural extension from fly tying - so nice to catch a fish on a self built rod. Now, if you've also shot and dyed the material you used to tie the fly..............
