hey i have started digging for blackhead and brandling worms every sunday, i have quite a big box of them now, hundreds actually, it contains soil and ripped up damp newspaper and some grass. what else should i do to make sure they all survive until salmon season starts again? anyone every seen one of john wilsons fishing programs, where he shows you how to make a wormery and shows his personal wormery. anyone got any plans for that? anyone here know anything at all about how to breed blackhead worms? nowadays they are extremly hard to get your hands on (they are the ultimate salmon bait), so who knows could maybe make a few bucks.....

Hi dimebag. try this link on how to build a wormerie, you can put your brandlings or dendrobena's in it......www.dorsetforyou.com/index.jsp I would'nt mix your blackheads with them and never put grass in, nomatter what you read,i dont know about you, but i only get blackheads in quite light sandy soil.So i would think a separate one for them, but i,m no expert.
Best of luck and a happy new year. silverinvicta. ps "PLEASE" no blackhead jokes

Personally i like to add a bit of moss on top of the wormery after i have dug the worms i put them on top of the moss, they then have to work thier way through the moss to the soil/newspaper i beileve it cleans them/hardens them but i have no proof of this! One local boy back home use to put a test tube full of milk in his wormery. Cheers Aled

Do you know what i think guys? I think iys self confidence, i have more confidence in a worm which has been stored in moss/newspaper than one stored totally in earth or in grass clippings. What a discussion topic here we are seriously discussing an organism which one day will get sweet revenge on us by devouring our decomposing bodies. Good Luck to them! Cheers Aled

I'm with Aled on the sphagnum moss and newspaper shreds.
Once obtained keep the worms in a fairly small container (~ 5 litre plastic paint container with holes drilled in the lid) with a mix of moss and small shreds of newspaper. To cool the contents and keep the worms in good fishing condition keep the container covered with an old constantly damp towel (bottom end stood in water) in a shady and windy corner. Change bedding as it starts to look 'grotty'.
Good (post pub :-) worm hunting, Ian

For long term storage do the worms need any sort of feeding?

From what I can gather chicken pellets are the preferred choice of worm food used by worm breeders. Here's a fairly exotic recipe from wormswrangler.com/Art17.htm5 parts chicken layer pellets or chick starter 2 parts wheat or rice bran 2 parts alfalfa pellets 1 part whole wheat flour 1 part agricultural lime 1 part powdered milk Pellets alone will do though.

I use chicken manure pellets, watered before putting into the bin! I dont use them all the time though, just now and again.
I mostly use kitchen waste now, its Green and the worms seem to love it.
The problem i have with my worms...dendrobaena...is that they escape, migrate etc.
I have tried to stop them with all sorts of devices but it doesnt work!
