Tip-off from a barbel site that I occasionally post on... Foot of page 5 in this week's Angling Times: Readers' Offer - 5 LED, 3 x AA (or AAA) powered headlamp - £1.99 post paid. Just posted my order for, er, five... That is really cheap! I now mainly use the Tikkas, but I built quite a few of these at one time. You may modify the circuit as desired to use red LED´s etc. ( Good for night fishing!). There are plenty of circuits for high power LED´s on the web. My red headlamp runs for about 150 hours on two 1000 ma nickel/cadmium accus, and is a lot brighter than many of the manufactured items. www.singletrackworld.com/article.php?sid=1192TL MC

I have the Tikka with a white led, however it has the red filter.
Building your own seems slightly costly though, but i suppose you can modify the circuit to do what you like.

Hi, I use the Petzl Tactikka Plus (possibly the same one you use Hoppy), which has the pull down red filter. Also, the brightness of the LED,s can be dimmed down a fair bit too, making a very soft light just bright enough for retieing hooks etc. It,s £29 but well worth it to me, for the red filter alone--highly reccommended.

Just received my 5 AT (3-LED, as it turned out) headlight specials. Brilliant for the money.
