I write this thread because Ive just been thinking back to the first ever fly fishing outfit I was sold, A 10ft or so 8/9# shakespeare outfit with a 9#double taper line....
I can still remember the sell from the shopkeeper to me
"I would be able to cast phenominal distances and reel in the biggest of fish..... "
Ok, 8/9# yes, I would probably use such a rod and line now for single handed salmon fishing in the late summer, but when a young newcomer turns up with his
saved up money asking for a recommended outfit for small resovoir fishing for trout, would you expect to be sold such equipment....obviously a 6# 8-9ft rod with a weight forward line would have been more suitable..
I ask because even to this day and based on recient observations from the people who have come to me for casting tuition thus far, only a tiny percentage of them has come with the right tool for the right job and it seems people are still being sold unbalanced or wholely inappropriate outfits....
I have seen very expensive sage rods of just over 7ft in length coupled with extreme distance long headed lines, watching them struggling in vain to aerialise the head, Ive encountered mismatched doubled handed salmon rods with regards to line wieght and head length for the type of river they intended to fish...
I can understand that there is a bewildering choice of products available of which to choose from as a newcomer, the concern is that the majority of persons stated that they were recomended the outfit they posses, such as i was back in the day that i was sold the equivalent to a begginer of what a 15ft double handed rod would be like to cast single handedly now......
A bit of fun maybe to laugh about what we used or sold in the past ;D, but i wonder just how many outfits are stashed in the corner of the garage becuase they simply cannot" and frankly couldnt be expected to" use it for the purpose of which it was intendedly bought....
