After catching my first 4 salmon on fly this season, all on a single hander, i am now looking to buy a more specialised rod, something in the region of 10 ft 6" or 11 ft 8/9 weight ... can anyone advise on a choice? I have tried a double hander but found it a real pain and came to the conclusion that it was to unwieldly on a river the size of the teifi.

I have tried a double hander but found it a real pain and came to the conclusion that it was to unwieldly on a river the size of the teifi. Hmm. I have long used a 12ft to 13ft 9-weight two-hander (12ft nowadays) on the teifi and similar rivers, PR, and am glad of it when a single-handed rod is either not up to fishing more deeply sunk larger flies / tubes effectively and effortlessly, or is just too tiring on the casting arm during the course of a longish day. In short, I use both types of rod - a single-hander for smaller flies and lighter flows, and the 12-footer for heavier work (the latter will 'hang' a fly over a lie and often fish it far more attractively, too). PS - When I fish with a single-hander for salmon, I often find myself fishing "sewin style". This will catch you SOME salmon, but at other times the salmon, though clearly present, simply stare straight through your fly and its method of presentation. There's an old adage that goes summat like "When drinking champagne, you need to THINK champagne - applies to a lot of salmon, in my experience.

A much too expensive one, pr - a Sage RPL # 9/10 (which I could afford at the time) that is no longer made. I handled a couple of these rods (and cast with one of them) - Guideline LPXe 12ft 6ins - though, a few weeks ago - NICE... Guideline is a Scandinavian firm. The rods are around £250. A bit of Googling should find a British stockist.

Just taken delivery of new blank - from Steelhead56 on Ebay. 13ft, 8/9 Spey, blank weight of under 5oz. £53! It's a Chinese blank (aren't they all these days? ;D) - sold in the States by the Batson Company under the brand name Forecast. Once built up it should provide some fun on the Teifi next season - in the meantime, I continue to worry the residents of the village by waving it about in the garden - the spey blank that is.
