It's perhaps also worth mentioning that the top 5 casters, and 7 out of the top 10 in this competition, were all from Scotland. A fantastic performance against some of the best casters from all over the world.
The same 5, plus Steve Choate (who finished 7th in San Fransisco), competed in the finals of the CLA (formerly Musto) competition last summer. I actually think the Speyorama is a better test of all round ability, requiring single and double spey (or snake roll) casts off both shoulders instead of a single 'hero' cast. It also is closer to real fishing conditions, in that the casters are waist deep in water and use 15' rods, rather than 18' rods off a platform.
Nevertheless, if you get a chance to see any of these guys at any of the Game Fairs etc this summer, do go along to watch. Their casting is quite an eye-opener. Incidentally, Gordon Armstrong actually cast further than Scott M at the Speyorama with both left and right handed single speys, and if anyone can take Scott's world title from him I'd back Gordon.

For the SF event, the maximum length was set at 15'1". This is not, as some conspiracy theorists suggested, just to permit the users of the Sage 15'1" to sneak under the wire, but to allow for any slight tightness in the ferrules of a 15' rod which might push it slightly over its nominal length. For the Game Fair event the rods have to be less than 18'. As to brands, Scott M is using Daiwa this year; he used to use B&W, but they wouldn't pay him enough. Gordon Armstrong (2nd) was using a Carron, as were James Chalmers (3rd), Andrew Toft (5th) and Gary Scott (8th). I think Ian Gordon (4th), was using a prototype Partridge. Pretty sure Steve Choate (7th) uses Loomis. The top casters were all using long belly lines; SA XLTs, Carrons (either the 85' or 95' belly models) and a prototype Partridge with 85' belly seemed to have taken the top spots.
