Hi,
Great Forum - for the record I can confirm that its a poor season for me too !
Anyone know where there are Irish/Lane Minnows for sale (deadly for sewin) ?
Am seriously thinking of making my own if I cannot buy some - so if anyone has any experience of home manufacture any pointers would be appreciated.

I used to use them way back and they were good for sewin in medium water because they went deep. They are buggers for twisting your line however, regardless of how good your swivels are. I also kept losing the mounts/hooks which slipped out easily. Annoyingly you were not able to buy them separately from the minnow. I ended up with lots of minnows and one or two hook mounts. As I recall they were not cheap either, even then.
I believe you can buy them from most mail-order companies. They are sometimes advertised in the Classified sections of the mags.

Minnow mounts can easily be made for a few pennies; all you need is a treble hook of appropriate size, a pierced round bead or tulip, a small swivel and some Alasticum wire. I have always used beads rather than tulips - I feel the plastic tube inserted up the rear end of the minnow body may impede its free spinning which leads to line twist. McHardy's of Carlisle used to be a good supplier of ingredients for this sort of thing; I have several lifetimes' supply for all the spinning I do these days, so haven't bought any for years. Don't know if they're still any good, but I've seen them advertising kits to make flying C's, so they'd be a good place to start.
As for making your own heavy minnows, I have some that were turned from brass rod by a friend. They are direct copies of the old Hatton Wye minnows, and so a little heavier than a Lane minnow. Shouldn't be too hard to make something along these lines if you have access to a metal lathe, or know someone who has. A couple of hacksaw slots will accommodate the fins which are then epoxied in and the whole thing painted in whatever colour scheme you fancy.

Further to the Lane Minnow thread I have since discovered: a) The price of Lane minnows has increased steeply. b) I recently bought some Irish Minnows from McHardys which are made specially for them. They are cheaper (£2.60) and very similar to the Lane variety (slightly fatter and finish about 90% of the Lane quality). These were ordered from the McHardy catalogue (their website is just for contacts info www.mchardys.co.uk/). The catalogue is good and has lots of stuff for DIY spinner construction too. (BTW I have no connection with them !)
