I have some old devons that need repainting ; can anyone recommend suitable paint and colours to use ? They range from 1" to 3" long made from wood ,alluminium and brass. would an enamel paint be best for the metal ones ? Some of them are bare metal ,will they catch fish in this state ,without painting ? Tight lines.

I don't use devons much these days, but when I did I'd buy the blank shells and use Humbrol paint as sold to modellers. See www.airfix.com/paints.asp. This seemed to work OK on plastic, metal and wood. Otherwise aerosols of car touch-up paint are good if you're doing a lot at a time. I used them for salmon, so colours for sea trout may vary. But I generally stuck to three colour schemes: yellow belly (dark green & yellow), blue and silver, and brown (or black) and gold. Depending on the colour of the metal, you could make the last two by only painting one half of the minnow, although you might want to use a clear lacquer on the bare metal to keep it bright.

Hi Wnion A mate of mine still uses the old type of devon a lot he swears by an all gold version. Personally i rarely spin these days and prefer the Irish Lane minnow. Cheers Aled
