Dwr Cymru Welsh Water has been fined £6,000 after pleading guilty to causing polluting matter (raw untreated sewage and sewage debris) to enter the Nant Crymlyn, a tributary of the River Ewenny in Bridgend. The company was also ordered to pay costs of £1,360 in the prosecution, brought by Environment Agency Wales at Bridgend Magistrates' Court on 17 September 2007.
Dwr Cymru Welsh Water pleaded guilty on one charge under Section 85(1) and (6) of the Water Resources Act 1991. On 24 September 2006 Agency officers were alerted,by a householder, reporting a manhole surcharging raw sewage into her garden, and into the Nant Crymlyn. Officers found that it was polluted by raw untreated sewage and sewage litter and Agency biologists confirmed an impact to cause significant damage to water quality for approximately 1 kilometre in the watercourse.
Following the case Agency Environment Officer Joanne Fitton said: "We are working closely with Dwr Cymru Welsh Water and their sewerage agents, KELDA, to resolve the ongoing issues with the foul sewer in this area. We are confident with the investment promised that a longer-term solution can maintain water quality. However, on this occasion the extent was so significant we had no alternative but to pursue enforcement action. I would encourage anyone seeing a suspicious discharge to any river to contact us to help maintain water quality for all."
