BROWN TROUT STOCKING POLICY ON COMMITTEE AGENDA
Fisheries, Ecology and Recreation Advisory Committee meeting at 10.30 am, 30 October 2007, at Ty Cambria 29, Newport Road Cardiff
Environment Agency Wales’ committee advise on topics such as conserving Welsh fish stocks, protecting our wildlife and improving recreational opportunities.
Among the items for discussion is: National Trout and Grayling Strategy.
Stocking of farm strain fertile brown trout into the rivers of England and Wales has been widespread for more than a century. Around 900,000 such fish are stocked annually. When we launched the National Trout and Grayling Fisheries Strategy in 2003, we were concerned that such a practice might be damaging the viability of our wild brown trout populations. We introduced national restrictions aimed at avoiding any increase in stocking levels in waters with significant natural trout production, whilst we examined this issue further. We said that we would review the policy to see whether further constraint should be introduced from 2007.
