A COURT has heard that a net with stones used for ballast was placed on Fairbourne beach at the southern entrance to the Mawddach Estuary, in contravention of the Environment Agency Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Laws. Neil Evans, prosecuting for the Environment Agency, told Dolgellau magistrates, that there was a danger that salmon and sea trout stocks could be seriously affected by this type of “fixed engine” net placed at entrances to estuaries. He said that netting was allowed between December and March, when there was very little chance of affecting stocks, but it was illegal to place such nets at any other time. Steven Lee Evans, 26, of 29 Cefn Cadnant, Caernarfon, placed the net off Fairbourne beach near the “Bar” and across from Barmouth beach, magistrates heard. Acting on information, Bailiffs for the Environment Agency saw Evans put something in the boot of his car and return to the beach wearing waders that were up to his waist. When the bailiff checked the nets there were several mullet and three bass caught in them. When challenged Evans was alleged to have told the bailiffs that he was trying to catch bass. Evans pleaded guilty to placing an unauthorised “fixed engine” (the net) in tidal waters on 10 August last year. He was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £70 towards the prosecution costs. An order was made to dispose of the fish.

Is there anyone that could give a breakdown of cost to bring this prosecution about, including the EA Enforcement. It is high time that 'Magistrates' supported the 'Enforcement side' and not the 'Travelling Netter'. Someone from Caernarfon setting a net on the Mawddach? come on!

I know where your coming from Gwyniadun - it isn't proportionate to the crime. However today in Wolverhampton CC today a man received a Life sentence for a murder, minimum 26 years - this man shouldn't see the free world again - 26yrs aint enough for what he did Hoppy
