An opportunity arose today that allowed me a few hours on the Teme at Ludlow.
I only actually fished for just short of 3 hrs - but had some good sport once i'd found the Grayling. I fished the free town water and found it to be very good indeed. I should imagine its busy in the summer and on weekends, with coarse anglers.
In fact in the time I was out I manged 18 Grayling (16 of them small) and 2 around 30 ish cms. I also had a Brown trout of about 1/2lbs. Plenty of fish around - saw a few coming up in the water for a sniff at the flies. The majority took the middle and top dropper today.
The highlight was a good chub on the fly - it really scrapped - and was knocking 3lbs
Photos to follow.

Is it quite hard to get on the Teme? I have a friend Dave in the area who says that it is tied up with what i gather are quite exclusive clubs. I was on the Severn last week and was told this by another angler.

Rio,the BAA have lots of good water on the Teme,Cotheridge,Lindridge and Eastam are a few, lots of clubs have know opened there waters up to day tickets and a good days fishing can be had for about £4.its easy enough to join lots of clubs these days on the Teme and not over priced either,my local club water on the Teme costs £28 a season, and you hardly ever see another angler(salmon, grayling, chub, barbel etc)......... Double hander on that riffled water at Lindridge down from Eastam bridge :Pknow there's a thought ... stumpy.....

The access on the middle to lower Teme is easy enough but you'll bump into plenty of the barbel boys.
You can get on to fly fishing water with Tenbury Anglers but I wouldnt fancy the wading!!
Higher up is where the better game fishing is, and there, it is very exclusive.

Historically the most productive salmon fishing on the Teme - by a long way - was and remains the water from the junction with the Severn up to powick weir.

As Tom rightly said the river below Powick was and still is the most productive, although with the alterations to the confluence and the weir it is not as good at holding fish as it was. Alas most of the action is early season. There are plenty of other oppotunities along the middle Teme with some cracking water, with game angling clubs, and even the coarse syndicates are quiet pre June 16th. I have 4 miles, and know of numerous pools that yielded many salmon a day on my stretches in the past, although they are rarely fished any more, and I am always lurking near the Tywi. Generally, downstream of Ludlow to Worcester, there are plenty of opportunities for cheap Salmon angling. Darkwader

Agree entirely with darwader. The middle Teme has to be the most underfished salmon river in England and Wales.
Infact, that's reminded me I must go and have a look at a few of the pools this week....

Ahhhhh yes, what a difference a Barbel makes, within 10 years they changed the way the river was fished, the sleepy bastions of game fishing were overwhelmed with bankside activity, a new star was born and the silver tourist ignored by the majority of anglers. For years the banks were buzzing with activity, but as more rivers were stocked with Barbel and they grew well in to double figures the Teme has quietened down a little. Many of the new anglers don't even know the silver one still glides on up the river, holding up in the same pools and lies that their ancestors have been doing for generations. But imagine a proper run of sea trout, no more 4 hour drives to fish the Tywi each night, just sit on my patio with glass in hand. Wait till dusk, 5 minute walk across the field and then fishing. And,Oh yes the best bit, when I have had enough ( that will be when it is light) 5 minutes and I am in bed. Heaven! Still I can always dream

Darkwader,
It would seem that the Teme is a healthy river, with fish growing to good sizes (especially that photo you showed me in your fishing room!!!).
I will definately have a go at Dinham this year for the Salmon, and some other stretches - perhaps combined with a go at those Barbel - on the fly!
Bar the sea trout Bill, your place is pretty special, great views, great countryside, fishing, shooting etc etc - part of the excitement of sea troutting is the drive home at first light - after fishing all night!!!!

Bill, You can always fly fish for the salmon at night. Only difference is they're a bit bigger than your average sewin ;D Even the ones on the Towy Us poor souls in bewdley. ten minute walk home from the severn, or twenty minutes in the car from the Teme? what limited options we face. Quite right Hoppy. SSSSSHHHHHH! .... There's no game fishing in the worcestershire/shropshire borders you know
