Daz and I were fortunate to have a day on the River Ewenny on Friday as guests of the OAA. We have to thank Wynne for allowing us to fish, and also to Tuniwes for being ghillie. I was very surprised at the river, it is very similar to a chalk stream. I managed a Grayling on my 2nd cast - but after this we had a hard few hours. The fish were there, and there were some good ones - but they were difficult to tempt - the deeper weirs seemed to be about the only place where we got any interest for a little while. There was another angler out, fishing across and down - i dont know how this effects the fish in such a small clear and shallow river - the Ewenny Grayling are certainly a challenge. After a good walk, Daz and I split up - Daz walking upstream and myself going back to a shoal of fish lower down the river. I managed to pluck a few good fish from the shoal, and lost a nicer fish - they seemed to want the flies right on top of them - they didn't want to move much! There were a couple of fish in this shoal over 2.5lbs - they did my head in - but i thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of trying to catch them. Daz then spoke to me and told me he had found a shoal of fish and was plucking them out - including a number of 2lbs+ fish ;D ;D I stuck to the lower beat and found another fish - the biggest Grayling i have ever seen - i will not forget this fish. I fished over her for over an hour, and twice she came to look at the bug i was fishing - but she wouldn't have it. I left her for a while and returned to see her still holding station. I had a cast to her and hooked a fish, i intially thought it was the biggy, the real biggy - but alas it was a smaller fish! Tuniwes landed her and we put her at around 1.75lbs at least. She was less half the size of her companion! Managed a few others and pricked a couple of others. It was a great session on a gem of a river. Again our thanks go to Ogmore Angling Association. For details of the club - who offer Sewin, Salmon, Brown Trout and Grayling fishing on the rivers Ogmore and Ewenny please visit www.ogmoreanglingassociation.com/Thanks again go to Wynee and Ian Hoppy ps - Ian that fish has my name on it - dont pester her ;D

Well done on the Grayling. You are right about the almost chalkstream characteristics of the river. The Ewenny has a limestone source which accounts for the rich feeding available for the fish. This contrasts with the neighboring river Ogmore which is a more typically acid welsh stream. I remember reading an article by Moc Morgan a few years ago in the Western Mail, where he said, that before the industrial revolution the Ewenny had a reputation of being one of the best big brown trout waters in Wales. The Ewenny, despite being such a small stream, also holds some really big sewin in the summer months. These are quite a challenge but when you manage to hook one, because of the confines of such a small stream, give an unforgettable scrap! All the Best Phil

. We have to thank Wynne for allowing us to fish, and also to Tuniwes for being ghillie. We do indeed.....Many thanks to you both. It did start a bit slow as Hoppy has stated but after that...CHRIST!...Does that river hold some stonking Grayling or what, and in good numbers. ...I've fished this river a few times in the past but I have never seen fish of the stamp we had that day!.There were also quite a few juveniles about, fish around 4-5 inches which is always nice to see...The future is looking bright for this river. After the initial slow start things picked up considerably and I managed to catch quite consistently!.I did come across one shoal of real beauties,I took quite a few fish from this group with 3 of them going over 2lbs for sure, one well over!.That's good going for any river to produce fish like that. Just my luck to not have a camera ..Certainly my biggest grayling to date, and one I would have liked to have a pic of.Thanks again to Ian for the pic of the one posted. ...Not a bad shot that for a camera phone. There was another angler out, fishing across and down - i dont know how this effects the fish in such a small clear and shallow river - the Ewenny Grayling are certainly a challenge. I do....It scares the sh1t out of um! ;D Gently does it,and from below is definitely the way to go on there. They soon get a bit spooky after a few fish are taken from the shoal, and if you didn't get one in a couple of casts,a couple of minutes rest usually seen them coming back on fairly quickly. I'm not sure how many fish we had between us ?....But I can safely say myself and Hoppy had a fantastic day on a very special little river. That is one nice fish Daz.....on the maggot mate? ) ....How dare you!......Yeah! ..... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ps - Ian that fish has my name on it - dont pester her ;D Go Ian go!.....Get her mate....She shouldn't be to hard to find. And how do you know it was your name Hop ?...It just said "F##k off you English b##tard" Don't just assume it was yours mate......... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D DAZ.

tigermoth which stretch will you be fishing on?? Hi Goldhead. The stretch I have joined is with Pencoed. I am hoping that it will produce fish of similar quality to those which Daz and Hoppy ran into! I have had some maps through but to be honest - without wishing to offend anyone - I cant tell which is Pencoed water and which isn't! It appears to be upstream of the A48 and below the M4 junction. But it looks like they have fishing above the confluence of the two Ewenny rivers - on the tribs? Best Dave

I'm glad that Hoppy and Daz had such a good day on the Ewenny, which is a gem of a river.
Would you believe that the day after they fished, the river was subject to quite a large pollution. The river actually turned bright blue! We are uncertain as to what the substance is but I'm sure that EAW will investigate this.
With part of the river running through Bridgend industrial estate, sadly this little river is often subject to pollutions. The day before Daz and Hoppy's trip another pollution occurred, this time bright white.
Although there were no visible fish kills (this could not be ascertained due to the colour of the water) lets hope that the invertibrates are safe and well.

Hi TM
I've fished the Pencoed water a few times on a day ticket. There was some dispute last year about which bits of the river they own. It's generally in two sections, the bottom section is down by the ford factory and the top section from the factory up river. The top section is much tighter and needs a short rod but is a much nicer place to fish. One you get to the split in the river it gets very small although I have known of people fish it and catch grayling. I was given some sound advice the second time I fished it and that was to fish with small bugs 14s to 16s and that mafe a difference.
Best of luck

Cheers for the advice on the river Rich. Personally I like the sound of that top section. As my old man used to say: "The tighter the better son" Probably going to be a couple of weeks before I venture that way though School is a busy time at Christmas
