Has anyone here ever come across a rod; PENN EUROROD graphite, Trout Fly 11’0’’ AFTM 6-8 tree piece. It has a 4” but extension, originally had all Fuji eyes. Bought this rod about fifteen years ago’ it’s still my main rod for peal’ (grilse)and white trout (sewen). I have Googled the details' and have found nothing . I do remember trying to get another one of these rods; about a year after I bought this one, but was told the had been taken off the market; to many complaints’ mostly about the Fuji eyes and not being able to shoot line. I also had this problem' with this rod, however I changed the Fuji eyes’ for snake eyes’ and changed the rod from a bad rod’ to a great rod in my humble opinion. Any one on this forum' modified a rod and made it better. Adding but extensions’ changing the eyes of the rod and any other modifications’ that in you opinion improved the rod. Bandon

Hello Bandon, It sounds like your rod was either an American import for the European market or made over here under licence; certainly doesn't seem the sort of rod that U.S. anglers would favour although, having said that, longer rods are increasing in popularity over there now. Penn fitted all their rods with Fuji guides as standard, I think, still do which are (comparitively) more restrictive to fly lines than snakes-certainly heavier-so your mods would have improved it greatly. With regard to rod alterations, I made a 9' 6", 2-piece, staggered ferrule sea-trout/reservoir rod for somebody in 1972 (the date was on the butt) and it Should have cast like a dream but just wouldn't perform right so it was hung up and left until a month ago when I decided to do something about it! I cut the handle off completely, extended the butt by 10" and remade the cork grip higher up. The result is a regular,2-piece, 10-footer which (on grass) can cast and shoot almost a full line , an unbelieveable improvement. If you have made your rod all the better just by changing the guides and you enjoy fishing with it, then good on you and have a good season!
Good fishing!

Hi Bandon, i remember about that time Penn brought out a series of sea boat rods, the "Eurorod" for ridiculously low prices, but they were glass or a composite, i bought the 20 pound class to leave on the boat as a spare, and still use it today when i get out. i re-rung it put 2 extra rings on and its a belter .i did not know they had made fly rods as well.

Even tough it stats on the rod Graphite trout fly rod. It really looks like a small salmon fly rod I never really examined so close before comparing it to my other salmon fly rods it’s just like a miniature version. It really is a pleasure to use like I said I my summer salmon rod. i cant see myself replacing it any time soon other than routine maintenance it should last a few years yet i sure like others i have a lot of rods some used some gathering dust ;D ;D

Penn brought a lot of rods into the UK in the late 80s and early 90s of all different variations, some of the trout rods were at that time selling for between £100-£200. Some people liked them, some did not, myself just liked my Daiwa11'3"CF98 7-9, it did me for grilse & sea trout. That rod i did change, i took the single eyes off because i thought they were too tight, and the line smacked the rod when casting, i put on snakes, home made stainless steel ones, better than chromed ones. Some years later i reverted back to the fuji single legs, only this time the eyes were bigger, and instead of 1 stripper ring i put 2, which the modern Daiwa rods have now, shortened the handle and the fighting butt, and renewed the corks with Moet & Chandon ones a better grade than what is normally on them..

The trouble i had also was the backbone of the top section it kept on moving, even when it was taped up, it still kicked off to the left and the eyes would end up half way up on the right side, So when i had it stripped down i kept on bending the tip until i got it perfect, and now it does'nt move at all, but still keep taping it for safety...
