I've recently acquired a Vision Koma #9-11 reel for salmon, and I want to put #9 line on it for the summer. The blurb on the box states that it requires 270m of backing for a #11 line, that means I probably need about 400m+ of backing for the #9. Is this right, just wanteds to check with people who have practical experience with this reel and what they found they needed. Also is it gel spun or more ordinary type of backing? Cheers

Just sold one the other week mate....To be honest when loading a reel with backing i just fill it with enough so the main line has clearance of the reel...I load mine with snowbee squashy stuff and hardly use half of that...

hi Shedhed,
regarding the reel I will point out that they have quoted along with many other manufacturers that the capacity is based on their own 30lb dacron backing & line's. If you use a double taper or another spey line with more belly etc the capacity will be reduced - hopefully.
The vision stuff comes on 200yds spools in 30lb so generally info provided gives that a WF11 will fill reel nicely. A #9 i would hazard would maybe take 280-300yds tops of this backing, maybe less with bulkier backing or flyline
but can't really see more to be honest, if you are only using in the summer even 200yds then your no.9. might not quite come up to sweet spot as no.11 but nothing to worry about & besides you've still all that backing should 1 decide to turn about & head back to the atlantic ;D

Shedhead Iv'e got the smaller 7/8 model, I have a WF8 and approx 120 yard of backing on it, the spec for the reel says WF8 + 150 yards, the spool is not brim full as I leave a little room for the unlevel wind / line build up, so I would probably think that the spec given is about right,
Hope this is of some use to you.

Thanks Guys, Had visions of having three miles of backing on the spool. Set my mind at ease. also i don't like tying lengths of backing together, prefer all from one spool, it's an OCD thing. ;D

Just an after thought, Do you think that the length quoted was for 20lb not 30lb backing as it doesn't say in the blurb. and 270m does seem a large quote for a #11 line, compared to similar diameter reels on the market?

Re-read the box and looked on other forums. It is for 30lb backing BUT for WF lines, and as I gather, Spey lines are much thicker than WF, so I think 300yds of gel spun should do the trick.
