Been looking at various backing, and it seems to me to be a bit of a con,or am I missing something? You can pick up a couple of hundred yards of braid for under a tenner if you try,or even,if you can find it,buy it as saddlery thread or rope-whipping-thread from a chandlery. Is it any different? I dont resent the enterprise of someone respooling and labelling it for fishing, hell,it makes it available, its just that I'm a right stingy chiseller ;D Before anyone says, yes, you can use anything for backing, but I'm thinking of something the equivilent of the branded stuff.....

Hi Sean... got to be honest i never thought of saddlery thread, did'nt know it was the same, i bought a load of cheap at the time, Climax braid. It was from a bankrupt sale, i and a lot of mates have multipliers full of the stuff and i use it on my reels as backing, as it never gets used now i feel safe with it.

Hi all, i'm a bit old school when it comes to backing, I use slightly oversized reels and put 100 yds of 28lb sea fishing mono on...I like thick and strong...no puns please. Cheers Glyn.

Hi Glyn, i used mono for years, but i was never happy with a knot or bulge in the line, no matter how i tied it it always seemed huge, i really prefer braided mono, but as i have so many reels to fill, the Climax stuff came at the right price its 40lb bs so i do feel safe, i have one fear with braid, when its under pressure it only has to touch a sharp edge and its gone i doubt i will ever put that pressure on with a fly rod so i use it.

Hey John nice to hear from you, I have been wary of the new modern backings coz of the thinness and the little stretch they seem to have, I too as you worry if something so thin rubs on something.....ping...thats what worries me. As to the knot my needle knots seem to go through the rings ok...but then I havent been taken down to the backing yet with the fly I will think about that when it happens . But I do feel more secure knowing the stuff at the other end will hold if its needed. I still think if we were sold reels that held thicker backing we wouldnt be useing this thin stuff, this is the reason I fish with a reel a size or two above the rod line rateing to get the stuff on. Cheers Glyn

Glyn if i build my own rods i always use oversize rings, lads say it ruins the balance of the rod, i can never tell the difference, and i use different reels on the same rod so its crap. The rings are just in case i do get taken down to the backing, and i find the line shoots better. But it could all be imagination ;D
Nice to hear from you mate,
John P.
