Im looking for a cheap, really cheap,7/8 fly rod to use for sea and estuary work down here in cornwall.Due to the nature of the rocky coast and my unstable ankles damage to the rod is likely to the point of usual.Hence cheap to replace.Ive had Fladen and Penns offerings from trago and frankly they were bollocks and snapped in use. Has anyone anything to say about the Ron Thompson Axelerator, rephlex or speedforce?Tacklebargains has some ex-demo airflo middle-tips for £40 but Im unsure about their reputation. You welsh lads may have something to say about them...... Any suggestions lads?I realise no one wants to admit in public to owning a ron thomo, but come on tackle tarts, just for me,eh ...!

Get yerself a Diawa Whisker Fly - 2nd hand shouldn't be more than £30-£50 and are perfectly suited to cheap SWFFing...
Foxons, John Norris etc all have 2nd hand seconds on their websites.

I'm interested in this thread as I'm lookingfor a sacrificial SWFF rod to take to Denmark. Before anybody else says it, I know I'm not the best at looking after rods in the salt ;D

Hello Shocker, Firstly I"m no tackle tart.....the cheaper the better for me as long as it does the job,eh !As for a cheepo 7/8 9 6" rod for river, salt or stillwater I can vouch for a Ron Thompson "Steelhead" 9ft 7/8 which can also launch a home made Sh.head @ #9wt ! prodigious distances !!!!!! Some of the better known makes could"nt live with it......I"ve tried some but when salt fishing all it asks is to be washed in clean water after use & a careful wipe down around the rings.I"ve had this rod for 2 years now & it cost me £20 in the South Wales Game Fair !!!!!! Talk about value & performance ! I also have ,for £20 again , a RT X-CITE #7/8 @ 9ft 6" & I used this today @a local stillfishery & on 2 occasions cast out my Cortland 444 Fl #8 down to the backing on several occasions !!!! Its a tippy rod but roll cast well as well & it was the first time I used it but I"ll be using it again for sure.So if you can pick either of these 2 up you wont regret it.....& yes I hate tackle snobs.Seen too many I"m afraid......some nice guys amongst them but they would not be seen dead with an RT or Shakespeare in their mitts.....cant understand that mentality I"m afraid !!!!!!!!! Go on do it .......you know I may be right,I however know that I am right !!!!!!!!!!!!!! .One thing there is no fighting butt on either but I"ve a cousin who is a chippy & he made 2 for me on the lathe out of rose wood without affecting the balance. Best of luck, Ciao Chinook

Shocker i am going to be honest with you mate. There is no such thing as a sacrifical rod , if you buy a rod you want it to do its job its that simple. RT like every one do some good rods and some bad ones , just cos a rod costs £600 does not make it a good rod . I myself have fished in the salt for years and give my rods a bit of a hard life and they are nothing more than Diawa whiskers not cos they only cost just over a £100 new , but becouse they do the job well . If someone wants to stand next to me with a £600 rod and a £200 reel then great , let him do it ....dosnt say he will catch more fish and thats what counts mate. So buy what feels right for you mate and dont worry about whos name is on it . Norsy.

Thanks to everyone for their advice and expriences Ive gone with a secondhand Whisker, partly from advice, partly from availability, that is a fine fellow from the forum sorted one for me. ;D Thats not to say that I wont grab myself a Rono Thomo at the right price as both chinook and norsy suggest I do like to have nice tackle (sometimes) and do own several v special rods, even so,its all about fitness for task for me.If a 30 year old intrepid gearfly or indeed rimfly does the job well then im happy with that.I have a wide range of tackle of all ages, some inherited from grandfather, some from new many years ago, some desperatly saved up for recently.I love it all.I use it all. Now its all about finding a plastic (sorry carbon composite) reel, large arbor, for less than anyone else paid!Just missed an okuma airframe for under a tenner on ebay............
